of our posts are about an issue that doesn't affect ANYFUCKINGONE, we have fallen down the rabbit hole.
HEALTHCARE IS THE ISSUE FOLKS. PLEASE DONT FALL FOR THE GAME THE MEDIA PLAYS.:wtf:

17. Blue collar guy after a Harvard prof. Cops love to go after the college crowd.
There is cross-class resentment there.

It happens everywhere.

Chicago '68. Cops beating up college kids. Kent State.

This is why the Chinese had to bring in a rural unit to bust up Tianaman Square. Go after the spoiled college kids.

Edited on Fri Jul-24-09 10:11 AM by AspenRose
It sure as hell affects me. And my father, my brother, and my sons. Do you think the DU is made up only of white people?! I am speechless.

I also suspect in light of the Rainbow Lounge incident, our GLBT DUers would disagree with you, too.

(And some of us can multitask.)

6. 90% of DUers spend tons of time watching cable channels. Their opinions and their interests are
Edited on Fri Jul-24-09 10:12 AM by John Q. Citizen
dictated by what's on TV right now today.

If Sarah Palin gets a run in her stockings, and it's on cable, then every thread will be about that.

If the cable channels wanted to kill health care reform, all they would have to do is put nothing on about health care reform, like they did for 15 years, and viola! It's instantly not an issue.

If they don't want everybody talking about race? Quit talking about Gates and for 20 years nobody will talk about race.

It's like magic

They don't even know that it's happening to them. Look at the posters on your thread. They think they want to talk about race. They just forgot about it until CNN reminded them apparently.

10. And meanwhile, off of the computer they can be doing things that actually
aid in addressing other issues, I don't understand how some people believe that typing on a message board accomplishes what those in place to fix things can not? I for one see this issue as a very major problem in this country along with a hundred others, thankfully we have millions of people other than those that post on du to help fight for them...

11. I'm going to be in front of Blue Cross Blue Sheild at noon today with the Follow the Money Rally
Then we go down to Baucus office and try to buy him back.

RMy interest is how computer communications can be translated into on the ground action.

The social networking sites are interesting in this regard.

A couple of weeks ago my teenage daughter i traveled for just over 2 weeks in NY DC and Montreal, and we were hosted by 5 different people who we arraigned to stay at their home through the site couchsurfing.com

And political action has been greatly facilitated through computers to get people actually working on the ground.

but this wave of Gates posts and info is mostly cable driven i think, in terms of timing.

who perhaps don't have the time to fight for themselves...

I agree, the net can aid in alot of ways to help activism but we as humans cannot help talking about the big news of the day but your proving though that even if you make mention of this issue you are still doing other things to address other issues of importance, so I for one thank you for your help.

7. Like it or not this issue involving a police officer is an ISSUE that in my
mind has yet to be addressed to the point where such abuses will stop! I could take the time to find links for you to prove my point but perhaps you should, it is very real and dangerous problem innocent people have died because of false arrest and or imprisonment, yes,, health care is an issue and people are dying, and I myself need it addressed fast but I am not ignorant enough not to realize that we can address more than one issue of importance at a time....I mean seriously, why do we have so many government paid employees if they are only capable of handling one problem at a time????

And if you care so much what about the war??? people are still dying every single day. and yet it goes on, there are many many issues that need addressing where people's lives are at stake, don't fall into the trap where only one can be handled at a time...

every day that deal with "freepers," "birthers," and media conservatives, all about ganging up to bash the "enemy," with no issues of substance involved.

Count the # of posts that are all about someone on tv or the radio; about some atrocity committed by a teacher or a pit bull; about other DUers; about other groups.

Or, of course, picture threads, cheerleading threads, and "how dare they criticize our savior" threads.

Then count the # of posts about:

health care
ending the war
education
civil liberties
re-regulation
media reform
election reform

Or any other weighty, substantive issue facing us.

Do people come to DU to discuss issues, to debate, organize, and act?

Or do they come to reinforce their own opinions, find a gang that will act like an echo chamber, and practice verbal bullying the opposition?

32. Ignorance is no excuse,
even if you've only had 17 days to know everything there is to know about me.

You will not find a single post, in 6.5 years, here, in which I say that I "despise" Obama.

You will find several, if you are paying attention, in which I clearly state that my opposition to his policies is not personal, but based on his positions on issues.

You'll actually find a few in support of something he's done. Rare, lol, but I'm happy to give him credit when he's earned it from me. I'm sorry that he earns it so rarely.

Did you have something of substance to say about the points made in the OP that I was responding to, or did you just show up to fight with me?

give me ONE example of how over-discussing this issue on DU will affect you in the next year. IF, instead, we continue to hammer our constituents with our concerns over health care, we can come closer to getting what we want from this reform.
Why do you think its even being discussed in the media? Its because we have been calling our congresscritters incessantly on the issue. We can't stop now just because Harry the Limp says hes taking a vacation.

Edited on Fri Jul-24-09 12:55 PM by AspenRose
As well as a LOT of other people here. It affected me before health care was an issue, and will affect me long after it's gone.

To even suggest that people cannot focus on more than one subject at a time, or that people aren't personally active in their communities regarding this issue, is offensive. Both issues are important and I see posts here addressing both. If you don't like the topic being discussed, fine. That's what hide thread is for.

Your post has brought an either/or perspective to the situation, which is in itself divisive and extremely insensitive. And the fact that you are continuing to defend it speaks volumes.
