I begrudgingly clicked your link to FAUX which I try to avoid when google news search could give a non-Faux story elsewhere. He should not apologize, as he didn't call the officer a name, just that arresting proved the dept. acted stupidly. It's true, regardless of the definite fallout he will get for saying it (losing some police votes, but most people throwing a fit already hate him).
I think he will say that he clearly said that both side probably said things they wish they hadn't or something along that line, or that even if feelings were hurt, a man shouldn't be arrested in his own home for being upset after the officer determines that the owner isn't an intruder.
Sadly, the white thugs of my race are rearing their ugly heads and showing how racist they are in blasting the professor as being deserving, when had it happen to them, they'd be just as pissed! If not violent! I know one friend that has a horrible temper, he was in a war 35 years ago, so he's a bit antsy or whatever they say, so he'd have blasted the guy with curse words for coming into his home thinking he was a burglar because of what some driver-by said.
Again, the cop could've prevented ALL of this just by understanding the guy was going to have an unsavory attitude for being accused of breaking into his own home, and that it would appear because he's black in a rich neighborhood. What a jerk cop for being too proud.

2. I don't think he has any intention of doing that |

none whatsoever. However, I think he may, in the name of civility, make conciliatory remarks to settle things down some. But I don't think he thinks he needs to apologize.

3. A man's home is his castle |

President Obama has an opportunity here to get the public behind him.
This is about defending a little guy from the abuses of oppressive authority.
If he plays it right, not only will he not have to apologize, but the Cambridge police will have to apologize to Gates.
