Obama's Martha's Vineyard lair: 28 acres
Obama's Martha's Vineyard lair: 28 acres
A farm, golf tee, basketball court and beach -- and an army of Secret Service

The Swamp

by Mark Silva

This just in from Martha's Vineyard:

The place where the Obama family plans to spend the last week of August will offer some room to roam on the remote island off the coast of Cape Cod.

The Blue Heron Farm, a 28-acre retreat in the town of Chilmark, once deemed one of the most expensive towns in America, is among a stable of resorts that fetch $35,000 to $50,000 a week, according to an island correspondent, Sam Bungey, of the Vineyard Gazette, who has nailed down the location of the first family's vacation.

The "farm'' features a swimming pool, a golf tee and a small basketball court, as well as four dwellings and a half dozen other structures "in which to swing a cat'' -- plus private access to a stretch of Squibnocket Beach -- which may keep those Obama swimsuit photos to a minimum.

"It's a lavish choice of holiday home and fine fodder for those taking aim at the recession-era president,'' Bungey reports in a posting at the Daily Beast. "However, here are some mitigating factors worth considering. First, they're not renting the entire farm.''

The rest of the place is renting out to the presidential retinue, no small army. There's also a precedent for the president's visit: The previous owners played host to former President Bill Clinton and wife Hillary in 1988.

" As reported in this morning's Vineyard Gazette, while the details are still being hammered out, it appears that the rental agreement will be split into three leases: one to be held by the Obamas, another by the Secret Service and a third by a White House entourage.''

The Obamas also "are paying their own way--according to sources,'' Bungey reports. "The Obamas are treating the transaction as a standard summer rental, from payment terms right down to requesting permission to bring the family dog.''

Of course Bo goes, too.

2. He's absolutely earned the right to go. The Congress-not so much.
At least not some of them.

5. From the article...
:D

It is understood that Mr. Obama and his family will also be offered access to the private portion of Squibnocket Beach if they so choose.

25. Yeah...they did this to the Clintons when their first vacation as President was to MV...
Seems the Repug playbook starts in a "Rewind." They are doing the "old script" trying to make it relevant. Maybe they will find a Monica Plant in Obama's second term and Tweety Matthews and Rudi Guliani will be fretting over it in a few years. After all the Repugs are so far being successful keeping their crooks, liars and adulterers in as heroes. They figure what worked before can work again and as usual Dems will be too spineless to bother with.

So...Act I or Clinton: "Clintons to vacation on Martha's Vineyard with ****GASP*** the Kennedy's." They are CRUDE because they don't have a Ranch to go to....

Notice Bushie II bought a Pig Farm and turned it into a ranch and the press never spoke a peep about their "vacation home." The one they spent more time on in vacation than any other President in current times and where he was when George Tenent had his "Hair on Fire" over possible attack on us. Then came "9/11." While Bushie did his "Media Approved Vacation," on his "fake ranch."

as well as off nearby Nantucket.

8. Yep. According to what we'll be hearing, it's elitist for a President to rent 1/3 of a compound
but it deserves no comment or judgement whatsoever if a President or his parents own an entire shorefront compound. Cause that's OK. Because they were Republicans.

weekend.

7. Good for the Obamas
and glad to see they are spending their vacation dollars in Massachusetts. Anyone here from the Vinyard? Where's the best place for the Obamas to get ice cream?

16. I love MV! For ice cream - Mad Martha's, it's famous.
Chilmark (as are all the villages) is fantastic.

I know they will have a great time.

19. Ah! That's part of it's charm! And on sunny days, it is gorgeous. I like it both times.
You should give it another chance sometime. I've been there in all kinds of weather, I know it can be bad. I call it "atmospheric" - LOL.

It is a beautiful, beautiful place (like most of the MA coastline).

Summers there are quintessential "Americana".

B-)

24. My granddaughters and I went to MM's for ice cream in Edgartown this month!
The Vineyard is so wonderful. The kids love South Beach but I'm a little scared of it...kinda rough.

I take a catamaran from Rhode Island since I live in CT. It can be a rough ride but it gets you there...better than driving all the way to Woods Hole and getting a shuttle from a parking lot...but it is MORE money...

11. Shouldn't he be "clearin' brush" on his vacation?
Does Martha's Vineyard even have brush? Maybe there's some wild arugula that needs clearin'. :)
