1. I didn't hear one, and I don't think he owed one. He turned down the temperature
and the rhetoric. And he did it very well as usual!

and for people to try to listen to what each side is saying in this case. There is an opportunity that people might learn from each other and have some insight into the truth and relevancy of what each side is saying.

He really is a great President.

He SO NAILED the media and took responsibility for his words creating more heat than light (which I suspect may have been intentional). Now let's all have a beer, kiss and make up!

4. Not really
He softened his rhetoric and allowed for those who want to read an apology into it to read one. However, he stood by his original sentiments, that the police behaved wrongly, that he will not flinch from discussing racial issues, that profiling continues to be a problem.

It wasn't an apology as much as a quiet reassertion of his original thoughts, pruned of any rhetoric that would allow further media drama.

"I continue to believe, based on what I have heard, that there was an overreaction in pulling Prof. Gates out of his home and to the station..."

He's standing by his initial analysis that the cops were in the wrong, and until the cop admits he was in the wrong, that's where Obama SHOULD remain standing.

10. I am tired also. The media are pushing this
too far. All involved are human. Humans make mistakes all the time. I do not know of anyone who is perfect.

22. Everything the president does and says is under a microscope
That's the way it's always been, past and present. And ever since Clinton we dissect and parse it to the extreme.

25. Nope. And he did it very well.
He simply reiterated that he was not calling the Cambridge Police or the specific officer "stupid" - it was the ACT of arresting Gates that was stupid, regardless of who committed it. That was clear to me as soon as he spoke.

And he also reminded people that this whole inflammation of his remark is evidence that we are NOT post-racial.

He worked it well.
