I Always Go Back to Something My High School History Teacher Said on the First Day of Class
Edited on Sun Jul-26-09 03:45 PM by PopSixSquish
There is no such thing as American History. There is American History according to...

Meaning that one's interpretation and reaction to events cannot help but be based on one's perspective. I think this is exactly what Judge Sotomayor meant with the "wise Latina" comment. I think this is exactly what President Obama meant by "the cop acted stupidly".

And I'm not about to tell either one of them that their perspective is incorrect or that others have suffered the same indignities so who cares...

(I don't always succeed at this sentiment, but I try)

4. wish my highschool teacher
had said that.

Unfortunately, I didn't hear that until I was in college - (the 2nd time, 25 years after the first time). I really had my eyes opened. I never really KNEW the truths about "American History" . . .

If you want a good book on the subject, read Howard Zinn's: The People's History of the United States.
