Shakeup at Camp Hutchison

She’s slated to formally announce her Texas gubernatorial candidacy next month, but Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Tex.) is already shaking up her campaign team.

She’s replacing campaign manager Rick Wiley – he's headed to Wisconsin to manage Mark Neumann’s gubernatorial campaign -- with Terry Sullivan, who was a senior adviser to Hutchison during the 2006 Senate race.

Hutchison is bringing on Jeff Sadosky, the communications director in her Senate office, to serve as press secretary. And she’s bringing Minority Whip Eric Cantor’s rapid-response staffer Joe Pounder (one of 50 politicos to watch!) as a deputy press secretary.

The moves come as Gov. Rick Perry has been aggressively positioning himself as the anti-Washington conservative in the race. The governor turned down federal funds earmarked for unemployment assistance, and suggested the Lone Star State was so sick of taxes, it could secede from the country. Polls suggest his message resonating in the primary, with Perry pulling in the lead.

Hutchison is now fighting back, penning an op-ed in today's Austin American-Statesman that blasts Perry for “talking loudly and carrying a small stick.” She said she voted against the stimulus, but now that it’s passed, wants the money to benefit the state.
