I assume this is in reference to the goofy "Obama is racist" line that's circulated a bit.

My mother is pretty racist, and is an ardent Obama supporter. Can't always say what he stands for or what he wants, but, dammit, he went to Harvard and he's a dem so he's automatically a good guy. My mom's a bit strange that way--somehow she confuses parchment with character and learning with wisdom. I point out that the Unabomber went to Harvard and had a PhD, not just a JD, and moreover was tenure-track not just a beefed up lecturer, and she scowls and says he wasn't a dem. Eh.

Obama has his own narrative, one that's largely vicarious, since he believes he belongs to one group while his life patterns much more closely with the group he was born into. He has as much trouble realizing this as most other people do in recognizing the narratives that trap them--more so, since his narrative is one that tends to receive public approval and validation. While trapped, it's hard to be honest with oneself and with others, so it's hard to have an honest conversation. It's evern harder when you're a politician, and abandoning your narrative would create political problems (being cutting edge isn't always the popular thing).
