17. Joe's been on a tear lately.....
Slamming birthers, kinda/sorta siding with Gates, being dismissive of Palin and one or two other moments of lucidity.

It's been kind of surreal watching Joe be the practical one on the show every now and then.

6. For once, I wholeheartedly agree with him
I still vividly remember all of the feigned outrage in the media and the lunatics who were burning their records outside of radio stations. I also recall a disturbing incident when I had an appointment with a neurologist where I over heard the doctor's receptionists having a gleeful conversation about how they wanted to "strangle that 'fat, pig blonde' (Natalie Maines) for disrespecting the President."

7. Screw Mourning Joe and that twit of a sidekick he has on a leash...
He can say something insightful like this every day for the next decade, and still it won't be enough to make up for all the venom he has spewed in his stupid pitiful life.

I hate that rat bastard.

12. The Dixie Chicks real crime was making Nashville look stupid.

Consider, the first song they had banned by various country stations was years before there was a President Dubya. "Goodbye Earl" was banned because the lyrics weren't "country". It was a humorous song about a woman killing her abusive ex-boyfriend with poisoned black-eyed peas.

That ain't country?!? That is clearly a stereotypically country & western song. So what was the problem?

A lot of people would say the industry hated the Chicks because they are a girl band. It could be, but I would point out that female duos have been successful in C&W for some time.

Dixie Chicks came to Nashville during the era of country disco, er, I mean line-dancing. Common knowledge in the industry was that the C&W sound lacked broad appeal with the younger generation. So you had guys and gals in their faux western wear belting out what pretty much sounded like disco sung with a southern accent accompanied by synthesizers and screaming electric guitars.

Then along come the Dixie Chicks who did the exact opposite. Instead of cowboy hats and sequins, they punked it up a bit and dressed like they were out for a night in New York City. Worse yet, they included more than a hint of bluegrass in both their singing and their music with fiddles, banjos and even the steel guitar.

In other words, while the rest of the industry looked country but sounded like something else, the Chicks looked city while sounding country.

They immediately became the second best selling band of all time in Nashville history. Only the immortal Elvis Presley has outsold the Dixie Chicks among Nashville acts.

In doing so, they revived a sound the industry experts had determined would destroy the industry. So the industry set out to destroy the Chicks thinking it necessary for the industry to continue its growth.

16. There have been banned songs before.
Loretta Lynn's song "The Pill" was banned. Kitty Well's song "It wasn't God Who Made HonkyTonk Angels" was banned. If Patsy Cline hadn't been so talented they would have gotten after her too. She never toed the line.

Then there's Tanya Tucker who broke about every Nashville stricture, and Jeanie C. Riley sent them all around the bend with "Harper Valley PTA."

The bluegrass had little to do with what happened. Alison Kraus, Vince Gill, and Patty Loveless all proved that.

The Dixie Chicks made a remark at exactly the wrong time. In addition, nobody in Nashville except for a couple of people like Tim McGraw supported them. Even major musicians in other genres waited for a while before they recorded songs that protested the war. The Dixie Chicks were it.

In addition, Clear Channel owned a lot of radio stations that played country, and they put the kibosh on the DC. They might have had a chance, but not with everything aligned like it was. They still won every Grammy in sight for their next album.

What happened to them was symptomatic of the whole Iraq war time. Nobody wanted to say anything because they didn't want to be called unpatriotic. Bushco passed unconstitutional laws and took unconstitutional actions and nobody said boo. They were too scared. No wonder Cheney thought he could use the Army in Lackawanna. Who was gonna stop him?

It is awesome and I would highly recommend that you see it. You will be able to see exactly what they went through. It broke my heart that people could be treated like that in my country.

21. The fringe is becoming more unhinged every day.
Thinking conservative leaders (an oxymoron, I know) must find it difficult fielding crazy, hateful questions from their base. Hopefully, more of them will begin to denounce the wackiest of their group.

23. Joe is possibly trying to get his act together to run and certainly wants Repubs on top
and so isn't stupid enough to get caught on the extreme batshit fringe and sacrifice the more run of the mill rape that the Republicans have been behind for the last hundred years or so.

24. Actually, Joe isn't half bad for a Conservative
I remember when he wandered off the reservation during the Katrina crisis as well. And he wasn't running for anything then.

He doesn't always get a cookie. But sometimes he gets a cookie. Today he gets a cookie.

27. A big part of the campaign against the Dixie Chicks was pure opportunism.
Lots of conservatives are pretty much permanently seething about entertainment industry figures who lambaste conservatives and yearn to take some of those librul bastards' scalps. But they usually can't because it's safe to be leftish in Hollywood or if you're a rock singer. But country music is heavily conservative so the Chicks were prey that could likely be brought down. I imagine the Chicks had to have foreseen the possibility and respect them all the more for it.
