First PETA, then ELF.
I am all about Humane Treatment towards animals. And then PETA comes along and destroys any credibility that real animal rights activists may have had. Then ELF comes along, and hinders the environmental movement by their terrorist (yes, I said it - TERRORIST) techniques.

please, God, Goddess, Tao, any power that may be.......

PLEASE Don't let these radical fucks screw it up for everyone.

I'm having a tough time understand how vandalizing a person's home and a bank advances the cause of environmentalism.

If only the ELF people channelled all their energies into creating gardens, parks, and planting trees, instead of destroying property.

Michelle Obama, by planting that vegetable garden at the White House, has advanced the nation's interest in environmentalism one-hundred times more than anything the ELF has done.

and spared the biosphere?

9. You know, wildfires, the kind you hear about in the news burning tens of thousands of acres, start
Edited on Thu Jul-30-09 03:57 AM by 4lbs
because dry brush is ignited.

Why can't ELF, instead of damaging property, simply volunteer to clear all that dry brush? Then it would make it harder for wildfires to start wouldn't it? They could also volunteer to replace that brush with iceplant or cacti, which require very little water, and are fire resistant.

Hey look! It helps the environment! It helps fight, in a very constructive way, the chance of runaway wildfires burning down trees, homes, and displacing wildlife.

The ELF can volunteer to help the US Forest Service cut down all the dead and/or rotting trees in the national parks and plant young saplings in their place, spurring new tree growth. That helps the environment in a positive, constructive way.

You know what I think about when I hear about ELF burning down new home construction? I think that they've just created a fire that is spewing toxic smoke and fumes into the air for about an hour. How does that help the environment again?

But no, ELF simply wants to destroy to save the environment. "We had to burn it to save it."

10. For one, these wildfires are actually good for the environment
From Wiki Answers: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Why_are_small_forest_fires_good
Small wildfires have numerous benefits. One is that a series of small fires over a long period of time prevents a devastating large wildfire from occurring. One of the reasons we have a lot of damaging large wildfires today is because for most of the last century, the school of thought was to immediately put out any forest fires.

Wildfires convert old growth forests into newer growth. Old growth coniferous forests have a thick canopy and little sunlight reaches the forest floor. With little sunlight hitting the forest floor, not many plants can survive there. Consequently there is little food for animals to eat, and relatively few animals live in such an environment. A fire breaks down the canopy and allows the sunlight through, and new growth of numerous plants that could not survive in the shade grow in the sunny environment. Those plants attract animals that feed on them. New growth starts emerging within a couple days after a fire.

It is important to recognize that a forest fire does not consume the trees; the outside burns but the dead wood is left standing there for sometimes decades. These dead trees provide excellent food source for certain insects (and the animals that eat them), and great habitat for small mammals and birds. Some animals actually favor freshly-burned areas. Black-backed woodpeckers only live in freshly burned stands of trees, for example.

It's not unheard of for controlled burns to be started in some forests/grass areas.

As far as PETA and ELF...I'm of the opinion that sometimes you need that extreme end of the spectrum to get people talking. Take for example, that bat shit crazy birfer that showed up at that town hall meeting. Now, the repukes are beginning to back away from the nut wing. As I said, sometimes extremism is useful.

14. Wildfires are good for the environment? All that toxic smoke from a hundred thousand burning
Edited on Thu Jul-30-09 01:53 PM by 4lbs
acres is good for the environment?

So the arsonists that start them shouldn't be prosecuted?

I'm not talking about the fires that firefighters themselves start for whatever reason.

I'm talking about the ones that arsonists set, or the ones that are started when a downed power line sparks in dry brush, igniting a fire.

We had both such occurrences happen here in Southern California in the past several years.

Much, much, more than old growth is cleared. Many hundreds or thousands of healthy trees and plants are also burned.
