Crowley Was Star Student at Simon Wiesenthal Center, Wall Street Journal
http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2009/07/29/gates-and-crowley-update-911-caller-speaks-crowley-attended-simon-wiesenthal-center/

In 2007, Crowley attended a three-day program for police officers on racial profiling at the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles. He so impressed the staff there that he was invited back a year later for an advanced seminar, museum officials say.

Crowley’s attendance at the Jewish civil-rights organization’s programs hasn’t been previously reported, though it is widely known that he taught his own course on the subject at a local police department.

Sunny Lee-Goodman, director of the “Tools for Tolerance” law enforcement program at the Museum of Tolerance, says attendees of the “Perspectives on Profiling” program explore the perils of racial profiling. Using interactive exhibits at the museum, officers study both the Holocaust and the civil-rights movement in America. Officers also engage in soul-searching about their own prejudices.

She says of Crowley: “He stands out to me. He was one of those people who really engaged in sessions, who really showed a high level of understanding of the issue.”

Adding to the irony, Gates is often prominently featured at the museum’s law-enforcement training programs, which has held classes for about 100,000 police officers in both Los Angeles and New York City since 1996.

At the center’s New York tolerance center, etched on a wall near inspirational words from Gandhi and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., is a quotation from Gates: “There is no tolerance without respect. There is no respect without knowledge.”

2. So He Is A Smooth Jerk, Then, Captain, Not Just An Ordinary Jerk....
It may be so much racial prejudice here as 'bow down before, I am POLICE!!!' syndrome. This afflicts a good many police officers, who feel just about any citizen response which falls short of that expected by a worshiper in the presence of his living god is an intolerable affront.

4. When he took the courses, was he required to wear his uniform?
As a friend of him is quoted to have said "When he has the uniform on, Jim (Crowley) has an expectation of deference."
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/27/us/27gates.html

It seems being in uniform transforms the man.

He sorta did live up to his quote: “There is no tolerance without respect. There is no respect without knowledge.” He didn't tolerate Gates' being mouthy so he gave him no respect.

5. Crowley seems to do very well around authority figures
and not so well when he's the one in charge of things.

11. Conservatives tend to be either at your throat, or grovelling at your feet.

Authoritarianism requires both a master and a simpering servant.

8. The uniform does transform them.
Hell, I put my leather jacket on and it's instant cockiness. I can't imagine what a snappy outfit and a gun must do.

3. Then he definitely has no excuse.
He, of all people, should have been able to handle this situation better. All that training on racial sensitivity was obviously wasted on him.

7. Wiesenthal Center is pretty far right.
October 17, 2003

~snip~

In addition to being politically well connected, the Wiesenthal Center has extensive ties to the entertainment industry. And Schwarzenegger is Hollywood’s largest contributor to the Wiesenthal Center, Cooper said. He added that when then Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the center’s Museum of Tolerance, Schwarzenegger accompanied him, along with actor Jon Voight.

Yes, nutjob Jon Voight seems to be a favorite there.

14. Also...
they were big Bush supporters despite the fact that Bush's grandfather helped finance the Nazis and GWB's trust fund probably contains some of the Nazi-derived wealth that Prescott handed down to his heirs.

12. then why couldn't he understand that a black man who is accused of doing something
wrong in his own home(vehicle) or other property might feel upset, maybe more so than others as they are often suspected of things they didn't do just because of their race ?

and i'm getting tired of reading these things. none of it excuses the stupid arrest. it was stupid. lets say he isn't a bigot, the arrest was still stupid.

15. Yea, Justin Barrett was trained in racial profiling too.
So why are we supposed to accept this as some sort of character reference?

17. People are insane. How does sensitivity training or teaching such courses
absolve a cop of improper arrest and general muffing of his responsibilities. The biggest shame of this is the over connection with race. We may well have racial issues but they are the side dish in this meal.
