President Obama: "This is not a summit, guys..."
“I am, I have to say, fascinated with the fascination about this evening,” President Obama said today in the Oval Office, sitting alongside Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. He wasn’t referring to the constructive conversation he was having with President Arroyo, but rather media interest in the beers he’s hoisting tonight with Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates and Cambridge Police Sgt. James Crowley.

*snip*

“It’s a clever term,” the president said, “but this is not a summit, guys. It’s three folks having a drink at the end of the day and hopefully giving people an opportunity to listen to each other. And that’s really all it is.

“This is not a university seminar,” said the president who last week suggested this would be a “teachable moment.”

“It’s not a summit,” the president continued. “It’s an attempt to have some personal interaction when an issue has become so hyped and so symbolic that you lose sight of just the fact that these are people involved, including myself, all of whom are imperfect.”

1. I was glad he added that they would run this as the main story
and totally ignore the meeting he was having. CNN was crying like mad that they wouldn't get close enough to ask questions. The media is truly a joke these days.

18. Yeah, that was genius!
Obama knows the game. With that one statement he showed just how ridiculous the 24/7 media is!

4. he breaks some news there
we find out the beer was Crowley's idea. Which makes me now think he orchestrated this whole incident just to get a free beer.

15. There was an overhead shot of the White House.........
Edited on Thu Jul-30-09 05:46 PM by Clio the Leo
..... which the John King wanna-be then zoomed in on using the the giant board thingy. You know, moved the images around with his fingers and all that. CNN also had a composite shot of all of their cameras that they had stationed around the White House with the promise to catch every moment of the spectacle.

The shot began with someone who looked like a White House aide carrying a tray of cold ones out to the picnic table out in the Rose Garden ..... I'm sure it's a lovely picnic table, but it looks like it came from the Walmart. The President and Joe the Hottie were seated with their backs a bit to the cameras and Mr.'s Gates and Crowley seated on the other side. Mr. Crowley seemed to be doing the most talking.

They, of course, appeared oblivious to the camera spray. After about 30 seconds, the press was sent back inside.

19. Well, I think it would have been impossible.....
... to hold a beer-related event at the White House and NOT invite Joe Biden. ;)
