Republicans are losing the health care debate

Republicans are losing the health care debate

by Jed Lewison

Contra all the spin we've been hearing from BaucuCon and the GOP about health care, soak in these numbers from the NYT poll yesterday:

Source: New York Times poll

To summarize:

  1. Americans trust Obama over congressional GOPers on health care by a 55%-26% margin.

  2. 72% think Congress is moving either too slowly or at the right pace.

  3. 59% think Obama is moving either too slowly or at the right pace.

  4. 76% think health care costs pose a serious threat to the nation's economy.

  5. 66% support a Medicare-style public option for all Americans.
If that's what the Republicans call winning the health care debate, they are even more screwed than has been reported.

More importantly, if BaucuCon doesn't understand these numbers, then they gotta' get out more and stop hanging out with the wingnuts.

NYT article buried the details)

1. Even for Republicans.. its hard to cheer lead the big insurance companies
.. and Wall Street, when real unemployment reaches 20%. Even the brain dead Repukes are finally realizing that NOTHING trickles down from big corporations except abuse and misery.

9. That's corporate media PERCEPTION MANAGEMENT. But, reality is another story...Dems need to have the
fortitude to stick it out once the hype against healthcare loses its grip....or, rather, the PERCEPTION of its grip.

6. It's the CORPORATE NEWSMEDIA influencing the Dems inclined to slow-walk and obstruct healthcare
as the corporate mouthpieces fawn over delay while they smear the good Dem advocates.

8. Time is on our side...
First - thanks for the reality check! Second - time is on our side - really! If 1,400 citizens are losing health insurance each day that's half a million a year losing access health care. We are about to reach a tipping point where change must come. This poll shows that once again the citizens are ahead of the MSM and their elected officials.

10. What makes you think they care?
They kept up the war and tax cuts for the rich as bush's ratings dropped through the floor.

They know that they will please their corporate sponsors who will give them millions to buy the kind of advertising that will win elections. They know they can piss off a voter today and buy him back tomorrow.

So we win the popularity contest and they get the government they want. I don't see them feeling bad about that.

12. People think they are idiots now.
It doesn't count now. It only counts every two years.

pretty heavily since 2005. The Republicans will still be idiots next year, and Americans know it.

14. Good on you.
We need cock-eyed optimists. Here's hoping that you're right. My fifty odd years of progressive activism has left me a little cynical. I just don't see the sea change in human nature. But I sincerely hope that you're faith in your fellow man will pay off for us.

16. I think this poll is an outlier, and think they are winning the argument
This poll has Obama's approval at 58% and disapproval of 30%, both up from last month. Every other poll I have seen has his numbers on the decline.

I think they are winning the argument, though more people still support the public option then dont, just not nearly as much as before.
