Woman hit by rock thrown at windshield of car endures 11 years of pain

When rock was tossed onto I-35, ‘My life came to an abrupt halt’

By MATT ERICKSON
The Kansas City Star

Stephanie Parks caught a glimpse of her attacker. Monica Neff never did.

Neff didn’t even know what happened on July 29, 1998. She didn’t know why, while she sat in the passenger seat of her boyfriend’s car, blood started pouring from her face. She held her head in her hands and mumbled: “It’s bad. It’s bad. Call 911. Take me to the hospital. Take me to the hospital.”

Only a few days later did she learn what it was. Someone had thrown a baseball-sized rock onto Interstate 35 in Merriam from atop a retaining wall. It flew through the windshield and smashed her nose, her forehead and her plans for her life.

Parks went back to work the day after a water-cooler jug smashed a hole in her windshield earlier this month on I-35 in Claycomo. Thanks to a few inches’ worth of chance, the jug bounced off the edge of the windshield, and Parks came away with a few scratches.

1. Sick kids and overhead passes
Edited on Thu Jul-30-09 07:08 PM by brentspeak
I remember hearing about an incident here in NJ: some twisted piece of crap kid lobbed a bowling ball off of an overpass, crushing the skull of the driver unlucky enough to have been on the receiving end of it (the bowling ball apparently crashed through the car's top sun window). There really should be fences completely covering overpasses so that people can't toss large items off onto the highways.

3. People who toss things off overpasses "for fun" are complete asswipes.
They usually have no clue how much they can hurt someone, and do it at random as well, right out of the blue.

5. My son-in-law had a half of a brick tossed from a overpass. Lucky it
hit on the drivers side. He was lucky not being hurt. Some kids (or punks) think is funny to do shit like that.

6. Just this month, there was another thrown-rock attack
http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/AB/20090729/NEWS0107/307290037&s=d&page=2#pluckcomments">This time, in Cincinnati, where a 23-year-old woman, riding in a cab, was struck in the head by a rock thrown by a teenager. She has multiple head fractures, an uncertain prognosis, and no health insurance (so that Sean Hannity can crow like an idiot that "She does have health insurance - the emergency room.")

7. Oh how sad. But at least they caught the kid who threw the rock.
