Baucus says he's not sure how he'd vote on Sotomayor
Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) said Thursday he hasn’t made up his mind on whether he will vote to confirm Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor.

Baucus this summer has infuriated liberals on and off Capitol Hill by working to strike a deal with Republicans on healthcare reform. A “no” vote on Sotomayor would be adding fuel to the left’s fire at the Finance Committee chairman.

Baucus on Thursday twice told The Hill he is undecided on next week’s floor vote on Sotomayor.

“I have no idea,” Baucus said. “I haven’t paid any attention and I haven’t announced … I’ve been so busy with healthcare. It’s under consideration. I’ll certainly know when I vote, but right now I can’t tell you.”

4. BTW Baucus is NOT IN CHARGE OF HEALTH CARE NEGOTIATIONS

He is the chairman of a committee, one of 3 in the Senate and 3 in the House that will be passing out bills.

His will have the smallest amount of support - if he can get it out of committee.

7. Who cares? Just step the hell out of the way of health care reform.
She'll be confirmed despite Baucus' vote.

10. What? When can we get rid of this tool?
How insane is he? The Republicans have shot themselves in the foot by attacking her. Is Baucus so stupid that he would fall into the brilliant trap laid by the President (the one that worked on the Republicans like a charm)?

14. Voting against Sotomayor is like committing political suicide with all the backlash it would cause
Seriously, does Baucus want to commit political suicide by angering democrats? I mean he just saw a few months ago how that worked out for Specter making a bunch of statements that seemed sharply at odds with his new party, and doing this when liberals are already getting mad at him over health care.

If Baucus was from a deep red state, and running for reelection in 2010 with polls showing him as one of the most vulnerable senate democrats then I'd be more understanding, but this is a guy who regularly wins reelections in landslides, and from a state that Bill Clinton managed to carry and Obama came within striking distance in the last weeks of the campaign.

15. Going against a moderate Justice appointed by your own party is
always politically unwise. I doubt Baucus will be that brazen, there is no cover there.

18. Baucus just get it over with and jump over to the GOP then we can give your gavel to someone
who will use it well (hopefully) and you can enjoy minority status for years to come.

20. He is caving to the NRA ...
Contrarily to others.

http://washingtonindependent.com/53361/warner-on-sotomayor-nra-has-gone-beyond-its-mission

It’s not everyday that lawmakers with top ratings from the National Rifle Association go around criticizing the powerful gun lobby. But regarding the NRA’s bid to pressure senators to vote against Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, some are losing their patience.

Here’s Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), quoted yesterday by The Hill:

“I’m very disappointed. to be going beyond their Second Amendment issues, particularly when I think the judge’s positions on those issues are still fairly open,” Warner said. “I trust in her judgment and temperament. I think the NRA at some point has gone beyond its mission, and are perhaps allowing themselves to get hijacked by those who are in the extreme.”

Warner joins Sens. Tim Johnson (D-S.D.), John Tester (D-Mont.) and Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) as an A-rated lawmaker in the eyes of the NRA who has recently announced his support for Sotomayor.

Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), for the record, says he has no clue how he’ll vote on the nominee, The Hill notes.
