Dobbs' Ratings Tank Over "Birther" Controversy

Mr. Dobbs' first began reporting on Obama birth certificate conspiracy theories on the night of Wednesday, July 15. In the roughly two weeks since then, from July 15 through July 28, Mr. Dobbs' 7 p.m. show on CNN has averaged 653,000 total viewers and 157,000 in the 25-54 demo.

By contrast, during the first two weeks of the month (July 1 to July 14) Mr. Dobbs averaged 771,000 total viewers and 218,000 in the 25-54 demo. In other words, Mr. Dobbs' audience has decreased 15 percent in total viewers and 27 percent in the demo since the start of the controversy.

Maybe this will get CNN President Jon Klein's attention. After initially attempting to put Dobbs' birther madness to bed in an email that read, "It seems this story is dead- because anyone who still is not convinced doesn't really have a legitimate beef," Klein has had to go on the defensive as Dobbs continued to merrily dig himself a hole. This past week, Klein, on a panel discussion at the Television Critics Association press tour, argued that Dobbs was beyond his control so long as he was using the forum of his radio show:

1. Lou ought to have known better but evidently he just could not resist.
I'm pleased that his ratings have suffered as a result of his pig-headedness.

of the "concerned" wrinkles in his pasty, pathetic forehead.

8. They have on their radio show, I got into a match with the idiot with the glasses...
attempting to listen to Sirius left the other night I found myself instead listening to a race car event...boring, so after calling to complain I then turned the channel and decided to listen to the frothing skinheads for a small time, I easily got in a call but my call was for some reason cut off, the girl quickly told me to call back but I was too busy...plus it is simply exhausting attempting a debate with stupid...and yes, fox has hinted they believe its a possibility..anything to continue to ensure the fools that love them remain rapid...

6. I think that for many, including Dobbs, the birthers
replaced hammering on illegal immigrants, since they stopped coming, many have returned to their country once the recession started.

11. I quit watching dobbs soon after the primaries last year...
I don't remember the exact reason, but one day he picked up on one of the trivial "gaffes" Obama made and was just beating it to death.
He is a coocoo.
I have never turned him back on. Soon after I near completely stopped Cnn altogether. I just feel good neurons were being fried listening to blitzer, cooper, king, dobbs.
I watch about 15 minutes of American Morning now because while it is fluff, it is tolerable background noise while I'm getting dressed for work. CNN is otherwise never on here.

Those numbers sound VERY low and happy to be contributing

YAY!!

12. Trust me, Dobbs is just auditioning for Fox. Glen Beck's numbers were
dismal too, until he went to Fox and became a rightwing nutbag crusader, and I think he's now the highest rated show on Fox. The rightwing talking tools are masters at self promotion. They know the more absurb they are, the more they piss off the left, and the higher their ratings climb.

I wish progressive shows would declare a moratorium on these nutjobs, and just not cover them. I'll bet half their audience is progressive, because every progressive show spends half their time playing clips from these assholes. If I wanted to hear that crap, I'd tune in.

14. Actually, I can "not look". But it's obvious that more people agree with you.
They like watching & listening to this stuff, which is why advertisers pay huge amounts of money to these assholes. I still maintain that way too much time is spent on these nutjobs.

15. Faux and CNN should arrange a trade. Lou Dobbs goes to Faux, and CNN gets Shepard Smith.
Then Shepard's more moderate views can flourish on CNN.

20. Actually...

Actually, with CNN as his backdrop, and without him changing a thing personally, I wouldn't be surprised if Shepard began to be viewed as left of moderate.

I don't think we really see how the paradigm has shifted. CNN is only "moderate" because it isn't as far right as Fox.

16. I used to watch Lou Dobbs
Edited on Fri Jul-31-09 12:11 AM by Third Doctor
about a year and a half ago but I got tird of his pushing primarily one issue day after day (illegal immigration). I also saw that Anderson Cooper's show is the type of infotainment I can't stand, I liked Arron Brown's show before they sacked him for Cooper's. The fact that Blitzer kisses the ass of every Repub and asks dumb questions to Dems is a dead give away. I have not watched CNN in a while.

26. I used to watch Lou several years ago. I recently emailed CNN to tell them the
only show of theirs I watch is HLN, and that only on occasion.
It's a shame - they used to be a real news network.

21. I actually liked Dobbs
until he got on to the immigrant bashing a few years back. Unfortunately I had met and worked with immigrants, legal and undocumented, and found them to generally be the least empowered and most disenfranchised of any discernable group in our society. When Dobbs went off on these generally very poor and near politically powerless people, whom I had met and worked with, as the force which was bringing our country to its knees, I realized he had to be one of three things:

Stupid,

Racist, or

Lying.

I did not need to figure out which one was the case, all I needed was to find the remote.
