Washington Post apologizes for Clinton joke
Edited on Thu Aug-06-09 11:46 AM by Beacool
August 6, 2009

WASHINGTON – Two Washington Post journalists are apologizing and their satirical online video series has been canceled following criticism of a joke they told about Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Post Executive Editor Marcus Brauchli killed the "Mouthpiece Theater" series Wednesday after pulling the latest episode from the paper's Web site Friday.

In the video, columnist Dana Milbank and White House correspondent and blogger Chris Cillizza appeared in smoking jackets to discuss the kinds of beer politicians might drink. Milbank said he couldn't reveal to whom President Barack Obama would serve a drink called "Mad B---- Beer." That line was followed by a brief picture of Clinton.

The group Women, Action and the Media complained to the Post in a letter signed by 32 women. They called the video "sexist" and "tasteless."

"I regret that we put up that image," Milbank said, "and while I highly doubt the secretary of state has seen 'Mouthpiece Theater,' I would be honored to have the opportunity to apologize to her over a beer."

1. I'm surprised at Cilliza but Milbank once again proves he is an asshole.
Why am I not surprised?

3. Well, they screwed themselves.
It looks like the Post yanked their whole video series.

11. +1 I had little surprise seeing Milbank putting this drivel out. The fact that Cilliza was involved
Edited on Thu Aug-06-09 12:23 PM by rvablue
really, really disappointed me.

I like his commentary on KO. Never in a million years thought he'd be involved in something like this.

Live and learn......

21. Yep, sexism lurks underneath the surface.
It was rampant last year and it came from both sides of the political spectrum, to my great surprise and disappointment.

:(

5. It's amazing to me that there is STILL so much sexism in the media in 2009.
Of course we saw plenty of it in 2008 right here on DU (and still do to this day, although less than in the Primaries).

6. You said it!!!
Sexism ran rampant last year and still does. The media was absolutely disgusting and others were not much better.

Either way, I guess that these two jerks thought that it was funny to call the SOS a "mad b....".

;(

9. Sexism is okay. Hell only 3 out of 30 WP op-ed columnists are female. They just don't care
to listen to women.

14. "only 3 out of 30 WP op-ed columnists are female" WOW!!!
10% are female, when ~50% of the population is female.

Something is wrong with this picture.

I don't believe in forcing a 50/50 ratio, but 10% is WAY too low in representing a balanced point of view.

8. Too little, too late. Though Milbank said in Dec '07 that the media "would have their knives out
for Clinton." He was right. They still do.

12. Good. And not just because of what they said about SoS...
why are "serious" journalists playing dress-up and standup while there is a lot of NEWS to be covered.

Go back to your day jobs, boys. One of you (and it's obvious which one I'm talking about) was actually damn good at it until you sullied your rep with this piece of garbage.

13. Cillizza has been an asshole since he showed up....
and those who haven't seen it up to this point, haven't really been looking.
He is an apologist for anything GOP....he just learned to master the art
of looking like he was reporting facts instead of fiction....but it has been
consistent fiction, nevertheless.

I agree. Watch his face. He seems to think everything is a joke. Hope Keith stops having him on the show.

19. Here's Daily Howler on Cilizza's apologizing for hurting his column's reputation...
http://www.dailyhowler.com/

"I would like to personally apologize for the content in last Friday's video as it was inconsistent not only with the Post brand but, more important and personal to me, the Fix brand which I have worked so hard to cultivate."

Good God, that’s awful! Calling a woman a “bitch” is, at this level, remarkably stupid. Unless you’re a modern, upper-end “journalist,” in which case the practice is inconsistent with a long string of brands! Never mind the denigration of the woman in question! The real harm here was carelessly done to Cillizza’s beloved Fix brand!

Chris Matthews' apology, when called on the carpet for saying that the reason Hillary was a senator and presidential candidate was because Bill "messed around, was also beyond lame.

Sexist creep and his tingling leg.......
