South Carolina Republican lawmakers will consider whether to impeach Gov. Mark Sanford (R) when they meet for their annual retreat this weekend, The State newspaper reports.
House Republicans will gather in Myrtle Beach, SC, and Sanford's alleged misconduct in office will be high on the agenda. In addition to his much publicized affair with an Argentinian woman, Sanford allegedly used his state airplane improperly and flew first class on the taxpayer's dime.
South Carolina's impeachment procedure is similar to that for the President. The House can initiate impeachment, after which the Senate can vote to convict. The state constitution provides for impeachment in the case of "serious crimes or serious misconduct in office."
Sanford has never been on good terms with fellow state Republicans, and it shows:
"Theres been a lot of silence. There's been a lack of direction," said state Rep. Greg Delleney, R-Chester, chairman of the Judiciary subcommittee that would likely handle impeachment. Delleney said he would vote for a bill to impeach Sanford.
"He left the state without anyone knowing where he was," Delleney said, adding that is "serious misconduct."
"That was a dereliction of duty as far as I was concerned."
