Obama’s FCC to enforce ‘net neutrality’
The Obama administration’s Federal Communications Commission (FCC) plans to keep the Internet free of increased user fees based on heavy Web traffic and slow downloads.

Julius Genachowski, the FCC chairman, told The Hill that his agency will support “net neutrality” and go after anyone who violates its tenets.

(snip)
The FCC can also look to Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) for backing on the issue. The lawmaker introduced net neutrality legislation just before the onset of the August recess that would guard against discriminatory practices by network operators.

3. I worked in the wireless industry under Bush's FCC
That office was rife with corporate corruption at that time. It's legitimately nice to see an FCC chair that isn't just there to pass on government money to corporations.

20. net neutrality has nothing to do with whether a content provider charges fees
for that content.
It has to do with how the conduit provider manages the transmission of content over their pipe.

29. non-sequitur
there are and will be sites with content on the Internet whose owners will require users to pay to access. For example, one day, which I hope never comes, DU might decide that the only way it could survive financially was to charge a subscription fee rather than rely on donations. That would be unfortunate. It also would have nothing to do with the issue of net neutrality.

Edited on Thu Aug-27-09 11:53 AM by kwolf68
I am trying to figure out if Markey has EVER introduced/supported legislation I didn't like. Everytime an issue of value to me arises, there his name is in the proper column. I'm moving him way up my list.

18. I'm not sure the Hill understands net neutrality ...
... because I don't think most fans of net neutrality think it prevents companies from charging different fees for different levels of usage.

I think it should be OK to charge heavy users more than light users for example. Most broadband providers do this now by charging different amounts for different speed limits but charging based on bandwidth used would not be popular but is not really a violation of net neutrality in my understanding.

30. I had this argument during the campaign...
Basically, they (the posters on another board) felt that since Obama supported Net Neutrality it must be something evil and they would fight any implementation of the policy on the Internet. They were a bit crestfallen to learn Net Neutrality is pretty much how the Net has operated since its inception.
