Meet The New Boss

Whatever the merits of cutting federal raises a bit, doing so by saying we're still in a post-9/11 emergency situation is a dick thing to do.

Obama Asks Federal Workers to Sacrifice

By Jonathan Allen | August 31, 2009 4:30 PM | Permalink | Comments (0)

Citing the current economic recession -- and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks eight years ago -- President Obama says he will use emergency powers to cut the programmed across-the-board January increase in federal employees' pay from 2.4 percent to 2.0 percent, according to a letter he sent to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., on Monday.

4. Federal Department of Psychic Economic Stats at work again?
The same Federal fortune telling folks that already knows in advance that seniors on SS wont see any inflation for the rest of this year and for all of 2010 so theres no need for COLA's?

They are such nice people.

6. It looks like this is a legal move

He's paring back raises and the authority to do this was passed as part of the post-9-11 "emergency" powers. So if he's explicitly using those powers, he has to invoke 9-11.

7. Considering prices are falling this year, that's still generous
If it was a cost of living adjustment, they would get pay cuts.

9. So what?
I was a state employee for over 20 years and experienced pay freezes several times. It beats layoffs where the work is then distributed to those who are still on the job.

I'm confident that federal employees are breathing a sigh of relief while they're pleasantly surprised that they're getting some kind of raise at all.
