They obviously don't need them and let's use those tax dollars on something else that is used. If they are being used in the classroom, what the hell could be more important than listening to the democratically elected leader of the free world? The Muppets? Curious George?
When Bush the elder spoke directly to classrooms on TV nationally 20 years ago, it seemed okay then (
http://www.nytimes.com/1989/09/13/us/bush-urges-youngsters-to-help-friends-on-drugs.html). Was it because he physically looked like the majority of us then? Were we more respectful of the office two decades ago? Do we have to have 100% of the vote to elect and support someone now?
This is not a sex talk that needs parental approval - it's the President. What is he going to say that scares a rational parent? These same parents who cry for a boycott on September 8 will freely let their kids surf the internet, post lurid pictures on facebook and watch Saw IV at the downtown cinema. I say if we can't have the President on OUR tax-funded TV sets in public schools, then no principals, parents or others should be televised in classrooms on those government supplied boxes.
Let's take those unused TV sets and pile them up in a huge hill next to Mount Rushmore as a stark reminder of where we have come in such a short time.
