could Obama thread the needle and phase in the public option? |
|
if certain triggers don't happen in a timely fashion.
this would seem a good compromise

1. It is a good compromise because it really isn't that different than HR3200. |
|
HR3200 calls for a 5-year delay, and then a 5-year phase-in period. That's the bill that the progressive caucus supports. If we essentially keep the same bill but change the "delay" and "phase-in" period to a "trigger," I don't see what the huge problem is. If the trigger has teeth, either private insurance will have to dramatically lower prices and not cut people, or they won't and we will have a public option in the same amount of time otherwise. It depends on what the trigger says.

4. And what is to prevent a future Congress (if the pubs take it back) from simply revoking |
|
the whole deal? Or lengthening the phase in period. Or making the triggers impossible?

7. If that is possible, it was possible with HR3200 in its current form. |
|
Which the progressive caucus supports.

13. But what I see is a further erosion of HR3200. This is foreboding. |
|
The aim is obviously to weaken any reform as much as possible at the outset.
I hope there is fight left in the White House. This is not a good place to be in whatever is being called negotiation. Far too much ground has been ceded, and far too soon.

3. No, the public option is the thread. |
|
Without it, nothing will get sewn up.

5. Funny how Bush never had to thread a needle when he was in office. |
|
Maybe because his party is open about putting corporations over people, and Obama has to do some needle-threading to work around the fact that his base does not agree with that.

12. Obama lacks swagger/ so darn polite |

Remember when Cheney was told that most Americans opposed the Iraq war?
He said "so?" It pissed me off so damn much at the time.
Now I think we need some of that attitude.
We need some Cheney-like swagger.
It hurts to say it.

6. There is the stench of appeasement in the air! |
|
Get it through your thick skull, we already compromised by not having Single Payer!
People should be given the choice to opt for Medicare without having to wait for age 65. That's the only viable public option!

single payer was discarded before any negotiations began.
public option was the initial position of the president.

14. It was Obama who discarded single payer right off the bat |
|
and the Senate Democrats that kept single payer advocates off the hearings.
The game is fixed, and nothing short of a Bolivarian Revolution can ever make it right for the American people.

15. it was never discarded by me..ever! Not as a democrat that has worked for single payer |
|
for my entire adult life! Not as a democrat that has worked for the party, been elected in the party, and has donated a shit load of money to the party! For me and most real democrats it was a compromise! My principles and values are not negotiable. and that is as far as I am going! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpAyan1fXCE&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Eredstate%2Ecom%2Fjrichardson%2F2009%2F08%2F11%2Fobamas%2Ddoublspeak%2Don%2Dsingle%2Dpayer%2Dhealth%2Dcare%2Dsystems%2F&feature=player_embedded

11. This is negotiation. If anyone is serious about a trigger and the good faith |
|
of the insurance companies then they can surely support a single payer trigger that gives them 10 years to cover 98+ percent, lowesr the inflation on their costs to match normal inflation, and to comply with regulation.
Make them really put something up if we have to take a trigger. Triggering the option isn't really anything too tough because it gives them the trigger time plus PO set up, and then several years to have an effect on the market. An option trigger would give them damn near a generation to jack around before we even begin to make headway.
We can work a deal but the Reich must put up or shut up. SINGLE PAYER TRIGGER OR OPTION DAY ONE.

16. Ha! The Repubs will cancel that "trigger" when they get back control of Congress! |
|
Get it? They would LOVE a trigger, and probably sign one...knowing that there is time for them to gain back control of the government and cancel that trigger program.
