He went from 68% approval Jan. 23rd to 55% today. http://www.gallup.com/poll/113980/Gallup-Daily-Obama-Job-Approval.aspx And he hasn't fallen below 50% yet. Not bad. Not bad at all. Yes, I see the trend lines. But once he gets HCR reform passed, I don't think it will continue.

4. Thank you so much for this post, Jen. It's been disheartening around
here with so many negative Obama posts that, after a brief hiatus from DU, coming back here made me wonder if I've entered a repub site.

7. It was inevitable
There was absolutely no way that the numbers President Obama had on Inauguration Day would hold. At that point, he was everything that many people wanted, when it comes time to actually govern, many people get disappointed when he doesn't match exactly what they had imagined him to be.

8. Yeah. And he has gotten through so many bills already it's a wonder that his numbers are
still above 50%.

11. I see a turnaround coming in the economy
Spoke with a couple of friends after the union meeting tonight. They're both from the collections department of the utility where I work. One is inside the office, the other one is an outside collector.

They both agree with me that people are starting to get jobs back, we've had people who have been delinquent for well over half a year coming up with money to start payment plans to pay their back bills.

12. Good! I hear a lot of that type of story...
and that should be good for a rise in Obama's approval.

14. I've also talked to a goodly number of people
who have bought or sold houses. They call up to either stop the utility I work for from billing them after the closing, or to start service in their names.

Of course, those homes that don't sell don't generate a call. But I'm getting a LOT more home sale calls than I got six months ago. We'll see if that holds out when the first time homebuyer credit turns into a pumpkin on December 1st.

when Jack Cafferty's on (during 4-7PM), he reads emails to questions he asks and he read about 26 of mine so far. Each one says, "Jenny from Nanuet, New York." :)

You don't work for Cablevision, do you?

18. Wow, double cool!
I only get up through channel 21, and if you take away the religious, the shopping, and the Spanish language channels, I only get about a dozen of them. However, there are three PBS channels, and that satisfies my former needs for the History and Discovery Channels, and Food Network. I refuse to pay them more than twenty bucks a month!

No, I don't work for Cablevision, I've always worked against them!

I'm hooked on MSNBC. I can't help it. But you seem to have the channels you want, so that's good.

Your nic made me ask that question since I call customer service for Cablevision about once or twice a month. :)

20. I used to have MSNBC
Wasn't supposed to get it on my cable package, but I did anyway. Then they scrambled it, requiring the dreaded "box" to get it. I miss Rachel! Hell, I even miss Joey Scar and Mika tussling in the morning! The rest of morning TV is such incredible drivel.

when they scrambled MSNBC (we have one tv with the DVR so it wasn't scrambled on that one) we DID get the box. I can't go without MSNBC at any time (but now the mornings ARE terrible with their "Morning Meeting" and "Dr. Nancy."

29. You mean when he starts backing away from what he campaigned on?
I guess you're right. We shouldn't've ever thought he would stick by anything he mentioned in his campaign.

We should all just smile as he negotiates his moderate policies with the Republicans... and finds a middle ground between the center and the far right...

10. Approval ratings only matter during election periods
Somebody has to do the hard governing--and just as children don't appreciate their parents until they are past their childish ways, the public will not appreciate Obama's actions until we've turned the corner.

30. Unfortunately that's not so...
There's a strong correlation between high approval ratings and a President's ability to get bills through congress. Congresspeople are always running for re-election and thus they want to be on board with a popular President and jump ship with an unpopular President.

21. He's Done A Great Job of Re-Regulating The Banks
All of those new rules to make sure another crash doesn't - wait, not a single new rule? Zip? Nada?

Well, at least he's attacked DADT and DOMA like he promised. You say he didn't, and allowed his DOJ to compare gay marriage to incest?

He's started the prosecution of confessed war criminals. Not that either, eh?

At least he doesn't have lobbyists working in the White House. What? He does? Tons of 'em?

Warrantless wiretapping - still going on? "Enemy combatants" held forever with no access to our legal system?

Well, at least we can all agree that he's carried the day on Health Care Reform!

Obama unveils biggest regulatory overhaul since 1930s

NYT, today:

U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner called for tougher new bank capital requirements aimed at curbing some of the risky lending practices that have been blamed for the crisis, a position supported by another global banking powerhouse, Britain.
