Flashback: "Bill Clinton is a Socialist who wants to take away your freedom"
Just to remind folks that Clinton went though a lot of the same kind of BS that Obama is dealing with.

From a RW News source, circa 1999:

"Bill Clinton's State of the Union speech reveals a socialist who wants to take away your freedom. Bill's speech drips with his contempt of our free market economic system. Bill's speech is a declaration of war against America's heritage.

Bill says that the government can do a better job of spending your money than you can. Bill says that you are not smart enough to take care of your children, your parents or your communities without government direction. And if that is not enough to boil your blood, Bill also wants to destroy the stock market, steal your money and federalize your schools."

Also:

"Bill is the pied piper for socialism. He wants to give your hard earned tax dollars to every special interest group under the sun in a premeditated example of divide and conquer. All they have to do is give up their right to be a free person."

and:

"The road to serfdom is paved with the words of Bill Clinton's State of the Union speech. If you love your family and love this country, rise up and protect our Constitution, our schools, our families and our freedom from this false prophet."

FYI, Source is WorldNetDaily.

6. I guess my point is that this isn't entirely new
It's been so long since we had a Democratic president that I think we may have forgotten how ugly it gets with all the garbage that gets thrown out there.

10. Thats true. Heck democrats have been accused of socialism since FDR
that charge is nothing new. What is new is the strength of media that the RW has on their side. Clinton would never have survived the Lewinsky scandal in todays climate.

11. Its not a competition, but the difference today is the intensity and the reach
the things Rush said to his nuts on talk radio are now being reported almost as fact or with little push back by so called reputable media.

NBC news never did segments on Hillary the lesbian, but I see segments about death panels and birth certificates and other nonsense all the time.

8. I remember. There is a hard core of the electorate ( 25% or so) that....
... is beyond reason and effectively unreachable. They will demonize Obama no matter how hard he tries to reconcile them... no matter how carefully he tries to incrementalize societal change.

This being the case... Obama should not repeat the mistake of the Clinton administration by trying to reconcile the unreconcilable. It will not be appreciated and any consideration in that regard will not be reciprocated by that hard core.

Circumstances are different. A more confrontational and direct approach is called for. Obama has legislative margins that Clinton only dreamed of.

9. State of the Union way different than school kids speech
They were horrific to Clinton, no question. But the saner Republicans kept the crazies in the attic. Now the sane Republicans are terrified and have retreated to the attic and the crazies are running amok.

13. Clinton didn't have to deal with nearly as many death threats
nor was his American citizenship challenged.

The same anti-Democratic issues are in play, but there's a deeper dimension to the hate with President Obama.

14. "The Assault on American Ideals"
That was Bennett's book on Bill.

They used a lot of that same kind of rhetoric.
