DU'ers Claim They Want A Public Option But There's Not ONE Pro-Active Thread
Edited on Fri Sep-04-09 11:24 PM by KittyWampus
A simple observation that pretty well demonstrates how easy it is to be negative and how hard it is to fight for change.

Not one thread about rallies or petitions or who to write to.

Just a bunch of noise about Dean in 2012 and ultimatums.

1. I've noticed
WTF is wrong with people here? When the chips are down, freak out and turn on your leaders? What the fuck kind of advocacy is that? How does complaining help to get affordable healthcare for my kids?

2. That's all I'm saying. Ted Kennedy was an inspiration. He didn't give up on liberal policies OR
the Democratic party.

I am disgusted with DU right now.

10. A big chunk of DU is the suicide dove wing of the party.
Bleat, scream, yell about everything you don't like, throw rocks at the people who are on your side, but be careful not to DO anything. :eyes:

Me, just last night I wrote an email to some people I know: two press secretaries of two congressional representatives and the online outreach person for a Senator, telling them all that the base is ready to get their back even if they have to return fire on the White House.

21. I signed the second of those petitions.
And wrote to the president, as I do frequently.

I am not convinced we are being heard, but have not given up.

4. Too many thought Obama was a Savior
who could part the waters all on his own. He was elected because he was an amazing campaigner with an army behind him. After he was elected the army went on vacation and his political party crawled into a hole.

6. the only people who thought Obama was a Savior were the asshole PUMA who were jealous
and Republicans voters who couldn't stand the thought of a black man winning.

5. Here's something for you.
http://prescriptions.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/24/group-aims-at-8-senators-for-public-option/

An article which lists several Senators who might be "pushable" into supporting a public option. Namely: Max Baucus of Montana; Kent Conrad of North Dakota; Ron Wyden of Oregon; Thomas Carper of Delaware; Jon Tester of Montana; Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas; Bill Nelson of Florida; and Mark Warner of Virginia.

If you are a constituent of one of these Senators, and you give a damn about a public option... letters/emails/calls might be in order.

12. Thanks for the link.
Both of my Senators support the public option (Washington state), but that hasn't stopped me from writing to them many times just to keep them in line.

There was a pro HCR in Seattle with 3,000 people. (Of course it got short shrift by the msm.)

Pro-Reform Rally In Seattle Ignored By Media

13. Ironically, I bet the pro reform rallies have to catch attention at just the right time...
... a time which fits them neatly into the "narrative" that the "newscrafters" (whoever the hell it is that comes up with the frames and storylines and details for all the anchors for all the news programs) are putting together... A truth which the RW PR firms seem to understand and take advantage of by creating an inundation of events... such that there are enough of them that they can, in their own right, for the "spine" of a news narrative.

And voila... the media effectiveness of teabaggers and deathers is decoded.

17. Cigna, Blue Cross, and Aetna run ads in the media markets
not to mention pharma.

There is a reason the media narrative is the way it is, and it has nothing to do with timing.

16. Pro-Action?
Ok, I live in PA. My congressman is a republican who will vote against anyway. No matter how much noise I make. Guess what Charlie Dent will vote against the President's bill. Action against him is 2010. I wrote to him sending him a hospital bill I had this year and I went to his office.

Arlen Specter, will vote for the bill. He has to he has a primary.

Bob Casey will vote for a public option if it is in the bill. He is the President's basketball partner.

Who the hell do I have to give action to?

19. Well, there are a few, but...
on any board like this you'll find vastly more keyboard Jeremiahs than people who have the time, will, and means to go out and do something. That's just the way it is.

What to do, really? It's always the same-- stay in touch with your congresscritters, LTTEs, attend and support local organizing groups, support lobbying organizations pushing your idea...

Lobbying-- it's always characterized as something nasty the other side does, but half the time we are the "other side." I've only got a few hundred bucks a year to spend on making my voice heard, and first the ACLU and Friends Committee on National Legislation get some of it. Then I'll look around for this year's environmental organization, and some local doings. It's not much from little old me, but it adds up if everyone who mouths off sends 50 bucks where it might do some good.

32. There may also be a bit of ADHD going around, given that President
Obama is only in the 9th month of his first year -- of his first term.

I count 8 years of this presidency, of which we're in the very early moments.
