District Responds to Parent Calls, E-mails
The district has received a number of calls and e-mails regarding President Obama's scheduled address to students on Tuesday, Sept. 8. In the Olathe District Schools, viewing the address is not a required activity for students. The district has no plans to show the President's address district-wide or building-wide to all students.
The district has policies and procedures in place for teachers to follow for the use of supplemental materials and other resources. Some teachers may use the broadcast, or portions of, if it matches the curriculum for that course or is part of a current events discussion. Since there is a delayed download later that day, the material can be viewed to determine appropriate uses.
If a parent requests a student to opt out of a classroom activity related to the President's address, that request will be honored and should be made to the principal.

You may be aware of the national address to students by President Obama scheduled for September 8, 2009. The U.S. Department of Education has asked all schools to allow students to view the Presidential speech.
Unified School District No. 232 will not formally participate in the broadcast of the President's address regarding education. However, some teachers may use clips of the speech for instructional purposes, if it ties to the curriculum. We have guidelines in place regarding the use of supplemental resources in the classroom. These materials must be tied to course outcomes.
We also encourage applicable and appropriate discussion of current events, as it relates to curriculum.
In short, we will not disrupt our normal schedule for the President's address.

But it’ll be available — provided the teacher wants to plug into the live telecast and a student’s parents haven’t voiced any objections.
