Here is why Pelosi says the House bill cannot pass without a public option
Edited on Tue Sep-08-09 03:52 PM by ProSense
There are 18 blue dogs committed to voting for a public option. Of the other 38, only a handful have said no.

There are 256 Democrats and 178 Republicans in the House.

The House bill can lose all 38 of those votes, and the bill passes 218 to 217 (on edit: forgot Ron Paul).

Link to blue dogs

Here are the 18 blue dogs in support:

Altmire, Jason (PA-04)
Baca, Joe (CA-43)
Bishop, Sanford (GA-02)
Boswell, Leonard (IA-03)
Cardoza, Dennis (CA-18)
Carney, Christopher (PA-10)
Cooper, Jim (TN-05)
Costa, Jim (CA-20)
Dahlkemper, Kathy (PA-03)
Harman, Jane (CA-36)
Holden, Tim (PA-17)
Kratovil, Jr., Frank (MD-01)
Murphy, Patrick (PA-08)
Salazar, John (CO-03)
Sanchez, Loretta (CA-47)
Schiff, Adam (CA-29)
Space, Zack (OH-18)
Wilson, Charles (OH-06)

Now one or two of them can change position at this point, but there are still many in the other 38 who haven't committed.

On the other hand, the progressive caucus has 81 House members.

The bill doesn't stand a chance if the progressive caucus doesn't support it.

3. This is not really about the house. Its about the Senate.
The House bill will have the public option

4. A public option in the House bill means it will be in the conference report.
No two ways about it.

5. she believes the progressives could cave
that if it came to it, they could be convinced not to sink the opportunity to have some reform rather than none.
