How much has Obama spent?
A repub talking point is that Obama has spent more in his first 6 months than Bush spent in 8 years?

How much has he spent? Give me some facts about this. I know I get lost on this issue.

It seems like I read that Bush did not include the cost of war in his budget plans.

1. Spent on what?
Edited on Wed Sep-09-09 06:37 AM by JTFrog
The wars that Bush started? The economy that Bush fucked up?

What expenses are we talking about here?

Did Clinton hand Bush the same fucked up situation to budget for?

3. Please don't fall for this obvious right-wing meme
Clinton had a projected surplus when he left office. Bush left office with an economy teetering on the brink of another Great Depression and Now the wingnuts are trying to make Obama responsible for the bad economy and high deficits to try to win back the mushy and supposedly "fiscally conservative" indies despite the fact they said "deficits don't matter", the previous Republican Congress never cared how they were going to pay for things. They also purposely left the money spent on Iraq and Afghanistan OUT of the budget to make it look "better" than it did. They TRIED to raid Social Security by "privatizing" it but we stopped that from happening. It's the Republicans who have been BAD for the economy and driven us to ruin and they can't just blame Bush because almost none of them did anything to rein his spending in. Who's kidding who? :eyes:

5. The bailouts were passed under the Bush admin. Rough estimate of Obama's spending...
Edited on Wed Sep-09-09 07:09 AM by HamdenRice
is $700 billion more than Bush, because of the Stimulus Bill, minus $500 billion, the cost of the TARP 1 bailout, which is non recurring. Don't let them try to blame the TARP spending on Obama.

So back of the envelope, Obama has spent about $200 billion more than Bush.

8. No, just back of the envelope reckoning
Generally, the federal budget is a battleship that doesn't turn easily, and most of each year's budget is similar to last year's.

So you look at the big NEW programs. The only big new program Obama has passed was the Stimulus Bill, $700 billion. But Bush had several big new programs in his last year as part of the financial crisis, and the biggest was TARP, about $750 billion. But TARP is a one off expenditure, not a recurring one. Also only about $500 billion was used.

So back of the envelope, Obama's net new spending is about $200 billion.

6. On cleaning up the huge mess Bush left? A lot.
Oddly, Bush's out of control spending and insane tax cuts for those most able to pay were never an issue for your repub talking points just last year. It seems those deficits, especially the ones Bush authored during boom times, were not an issue.

Yes the Bush Wars were 'off budget'. They lie and deceive about everything. It is all they have.

The initial bailout spending for the Bush Crash was under the Bush regime. Does Obama get charged with that too?

11. Bush fucked up more in his term than any other president in History......
Obama came in and was forced to pay not only for Bush's Iraq War, but also Bush's Tax cut for the rich.
