Roger Hickey's got it exactly right
He is head of Campaign for America's Future. In an interview on the Real News Network, he said:

"Part of this is the liberals signaling what they want. The President would be crazy to go on national television and slap them. He has two choices: he can choose to pull back and do something that's more acceptable to a larger number of Senators. Or, he can be like Lyndon Johnson. He can become a leader and ask Congress to rise to the occasion and produce a bill that will actually do the job."

Absolutely.

2. We are your base, Mr. President.
And we will have your back in 2012 only if you show us that you have our backs covered now. If that means vetoing a bad "health insurance reform" bill, so be it.
