WSJ !!!!! : GOP Rep. Joe Wilson: Presidential Heckler
President Barack Obama’s address to Congress this evening was moving along fairly smoothly until he pledged that there was nothing in the legislation that would provide health care to the millions of illegal immigrants residing in the nation.

A cry of “You lie!” was audible from the Republican side of the aisle. The Associated Press reports that the heckler was South Carolina Republican Rep. Joe Wilson.

“It’s not true,” the president responded to the outburst, while House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, seated behind the president, offered her mother-of-five glare towards the Republican side of the chamber. First Lady Michelle Obama was seen shaking her head from side to side.

8. Remember back in the Bush years
All the commentators would go crazy if you called Bush a liar. And that was just anywhere! Calling the President a liar in a joint session of congress is unbelievably disrespectful and he deserves to be punished.

13. I was called away from
the speech and come back to joe wilson all over the page.

What makes a liar from South Carolina shout "you lie" to the President of the United States in the Chamber when he's telling the truth?

Will this highlight that it is a fact? Will the corporatemedia investigate this and get the facts out?

Will there be much lemonade from the bones of joe freaking wilson?

16. reaction from the Telegraph in the UK
His outburst prompted cries of "Shame!" from the Democratic benches, while the president looked startled and Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House, shot a furious look to the left of the dais. First Lady Michelle Obama, watching from the public gallery, shook her head in dismay. Even the Republican colleague to Mr Wilson's left patted his arm to calm him down.

As soon as the president had uttered the last word of his speech, Mr Wilson bolted from the chamber of the House of Representatives on a media-evasion mission. Rahm Emanuel, the White House chief of staff and a former whip in the House, moved rapidly towards the area where Mr Wilson had been sitting and remonstrated with Lindsey Graham, the senator from South Carolina and whichever Republicans were listening.

Veteran Congress watches had never heard anything like it. Previous presidents have been subjected to the odd ironic chortles, a disapproving murmur or perhaps a jocular heckle, but not a full-throated insult like this.

It was a new low, and a sign of the strength of the antipathy Mr Obama provokes in some of his opponents. It was also a moment straight out of the rancorous town hall meetings on health care that have made the debate so bitter, one that as the president said, goes to the heart of America's character.

17. This thing has blown up quick
I am no psychic but something tells me that this is not going to be good for the republican party. They showed their asses this summer with the town halls and the school speech nonsense. Now the entire world watched as a elected official displayed childish, idiotic, behavior, towards the president. What gets me is the anger that was coming from the asshole. If anyone ever had a doubt that these fools are fueled by hate and racism......

18. Did you see the look on the President's face?
He looked at Wilson as if to say "have you completely lost our damned mind?"

And then he went right back to giving his speech.

I thought it was exactly the right touch - Wilson must have felt like a fool to have the President look at him like that after his outburst. BUSTED.

19. The guy's a PUNK, ...But! ....he's a good Republican. -- he should have been formally reprimanded.
We keep giving Republicans special dispensation (def. 2) because they are accepted to be ignorant jerks. I don't think we should make special cases for punks. They should be held to the same standard of behavior they expect Democrats to adhere to. Everybody should be expected to behave like a civilized adult in Congress - particularly when addresssing our President -- expecially since Obama is an ELECTED president. He IS the people's President.
