The Republicans had a chance to join Camelot and instead take the boat to Lilliput
Edited on Wed Sep-09-09 09:45 PM by grantcart

The President's speech, part tutorial, part history lesson, also included a headmaster's dressing down for the naughty nasty boys who have been smoking behind the gym.

The strong summary of the whole Health Care Reform will be discussed elsewhere but another story also played out, sometimes in painful detail, were the Republicans who exposed themselves as a group of adolescents in aging chalky white bodies approaching a near cadaver state.

The President, the First Gentleman, with the graceful First Lady, Dr. Biden, and Mrs. Kennedy watching reached out to those who question his nationality and his ability to give school children an innocent pep talk with a friendly, professional and civil tone and an open hand.

Having been offered a seat at King Arthur's round table where civil people talk honestly about their concerns and how to best solve the problems of the people they reperesent, they instead got on a ship and in front of the entire country chose to go to Lilliput instead.

You remember the Jonathan Swift classic where the hero is dispatched from the safety of his ship during a storm and finds himself in a land where people are 1/12th normal size.

It originated as a parable of the smallness of people in government and tonight the Republicans acted it out.

They entered the room already somewhat undersized because of their behavior in August spreading lies directly or accomodating the liars among them.

Then they pretended to be normal size as the President entered the room.

Then the take away shots showed them to be perplexed when to stand and when to sit, and they shrank a little bit more.

The President beckoned them to stop their travel to Lilliput and join them at King's Arthur Table - but they didn't hear him because they were texting their fans with a snide remark, and they shrank a little bit more.

As the President strived to lift the debate with noble traditional American values they were caught looking at each other wondering "should we stand, should we sit? Why won't somebody tell us what we think?" Now they were half their normal size.

The President accurately told them that we cannot add to the deficit and that previously when we went to war or gave the richest big tax breaks we forgot to consider the deficit then. A few missed the signal and stood but the others shrank and now were hard to see.

The President specifically outlined good ideas that Senator McCain and other Republicans had given in the past but when the camera tried to find them it was hard to see the shrinking figures.

When the President reminded us all of our last knight from Camelot and how had reached common ground with McCain, Grassley and Hatch they shifted in their seats and looked almost invisible.

And as the boat taking all of these small, small little people off to their home in Lilliput we could no longer see them but we could only hear the tiniest of them all, some very little person from South Carolina yelling "LIE".

Is Obama our Galahad?

Sir Galahad is a knight of King Arthur's Round Table and one of the three achievers of the Holy Grail in Arthurian legend. He is the illegitimate son of Sir Lancelot and Elaine of Carbonek, and is renowned for his gallantry and purity. He is perhaps the knightly embodiment of Jesus in the Arthurian legends.

<snip>

In Malory's "Le Morte d'Arthur", Galahad's incredible prowess and fortune in the quest for the Holy Grail are traced back to his piety. According to the legend, only pure knights may achieve the Grail. While in a general sense, this "purity" refers to chastity, Galahad appears to have lived a sinless life, and so as a result, lives and thinks on a level entirely apart from the other knights of the legend. This quality is reflected in Alfred, Lord Tennyson's poem Sir Galahad and its first four lines which state, "My good blade carves the casques of men,/My tough lance thrusteth sure,/My strength is as the strength of ten,/Because my heart is pure."

Despite, and perhaps because of his sinless nature, Galahad as a character seems inhuman. He defeats rival knights apparently without effort, speaks little to his fellow knights, and leads his companions to the Grail with a relentless determination.

27. Boy you must be a blast at parties. Here's a hint:

In the future when scanning the names of threads and you find a thread that has a reference to "Camelot" in it, skip that thread because there is a reasonably high chance that if the word "Camelot" is in the thread title there may be a reference to "Camelot" in the body of the OP.

Actually this thread had very little to do with Camelot and really referenced that literary "Camelot" in order to provide a symbolic contrast to Lilliput, which was the literary point to the OP.

33. uh well this is kind of embarassing but the point is that the Republicans
were diminished by the event.

You see they were invited to a collegial type of power sharing "the round table" where the first among others (as opposed to the Royal Deified King) led by example. Rather than accepting a noble offer they took a trip to another literary place - Lilliput.

The point of reference to Obama had nothing to do with royalty just that he was a gentleman and he embodied the chivalry of the tales of King Arthur and the Knights of the round table.

So to sum up the OP really has no allusions to Obama as king or somebody "elected" by God to serve over the people but as a leader who recieved other leaders as equals and sat together at a table with no head. The point of the OP was to illustrate, using well known literary icongraphy, to show how the Republicans continue to make bad decisions that continue to diminish them. The reference to Camelot was useful in making a subtle reference to the knight that wasn't there (that would be Senator Kennedy).

In other words you missed the whole point of the OP, which others seem to digest without difficulty, that Obama was offering a collegial, non authoritarian relationship, which has been rejected for some particularly "small" minded behavior.

Sorry you didn't win a prize this time but please come and play again.
