My letter to Congressman Wilson:
Edited on Thu Sep-10-09 04:22 AM by Are_grits_groceries
Congressman Wilson,

I do not even know where to begin in expressing my disgust at your incomprehensible and disrespectful behavior during President Obama’s speech. You have disgraced yourself, the people of the state of South Carolina, and the office to which you were elected. Suffice it to say that was the single most appalling act I have ever witnessed during a Presidential address.

I would strongly suggest that you look up the word “respect,” and give some thought to its meaning. My parents raised me to respect people. I was to show common courtesy to those I met, and that was the very least I should do.

You said that you let your emotions get the better of you. That behavior might be expected from a 5 year old, but not an adult. It is not an acceptable explanation nor is it the basis for a true apology.

To say that I didn’t agree with President George W. Bush when he was in office would be an understatement. However, I would no more have thought of calling him a liar in the middle of a speech than I would have thought of slapping him.

The President of the United States deserves the utmost respect. You might disagree with him, but there are civil ways to express your position. Congressman Wilson, you managed to use the lowest form of verbal behavior which was one step above throwing a rock.

I am sure that you will hear from some people who approve of your actions. I wouldn’t take much comfort from knowing I was a hero to the ill-mannered, unthinking, and uninformed. That is a parade I would not want to lead.

I have tried to express my displeasure about your actions in a civil manner that shows respect for the office you hold. If I was to express myself on the level that you have set, I would simply have asked, “Were you raised in a barn?”

Sincerely,

1. Change "ask" to "asked" before you send it
A lot of what you wrote is very well written. I'd try for a softer opening though, to get him into "reading" the letter so that when it comes to the hard stuff he won't stop reading because he'll feel too involved at that point. You want what you are saying to sink in, and it won't if he just discards the letter. Start with something friendlier and then really drum home your opinion on his behavior in the second paragraph. It will give your disgust more influence with him. :)

2. Thanks!
That was my softer beginning.

I'll try for a better one when I can see straight.

8. I almost broke my teevee.
The only reason I didn't is that nothing I could throw was near my hands, and my cats were sleeping on top of me. I didn't consider him worth disturbing them.
