|
not support health care reform and he said no because the rethugs in his opinion are in a good position because 78% of people like there current health care and and want no change Mike Barnacle looked at him like he was crazy

10. Again, They Run the Message |
|
My health care is good; I have decent doctors. When I see them, they fix me. But my health insurance plan makes it very difficult for me to use my doctors. We truly need to change the language.

5. It IS high, but all surveys my firm did showed crazy high approval ratings for healthcare. |
|
I don't 'get' it.
My only guess is that half the survey population is men, and men deal with healthcare issues of themselves, their children and their elderly parents FAR less frequently than women do.

9. it's probably because if you have a "decent" plan, it's perfectly fine for your once a year visit |
|
for a checkup. It's when you have a serious illness or injury when they start denyingyou coverage.
for example, my employer covers my entire premium. so when i go for that rare visit, the 10 dollar copay is nothing. you throw a serious illness or pre-existing condition intothe mix, that when your coverage starts looking not so good.

I actually do like my healthcare (government), but just because I like my own healthcare doesn't mean that I'm oblivious to the fact that a lot of it is a mess and needs to be fixed. Sheesh. I mean, seriously, Joe? That's all you got? Just throwing out a number and implying that because people might like their own healthcare, their attitude is "I like mine, so screw everybody else?"
Oh, right. He's a Republican. I'm sure that IS the way he sees it.

11. So what's his point? All that poll means is that 78% of the people with |
|
health care will keep it, as the President said would be an option.

12. Regardless of reason or exact percentage |
|
We must come to terms with the "reality on the ground" here and accept that we have to work from the perspective that the majority of people are at least okay with their coverage.
It is near impossible to have success if you refuse to acknowledge the terrain you are operating in. Clearly, folks are under false impressions about the quality of their coverage but that does not negate the impression. The rub of this is we have to play on the oppositions side of the field to a very real degree. We cannot disregard data just because it does not help our case.

13. Sure - 78% of Americans like their health insurance compared to no health care |
|
Edited on Thu Sep-10-09 11:26 AM by kenny blankenship
When you ask a question without clearly defined alternatives people are free to assume you meant: do you like what you have as opposed to not having it at all?
In other words, Are you glad it's there? Yes, to have it is better than not to have it and it makes perfect sense that 78% would say they like it. That's about the same percentage that HAVE it. 22 % don't like it, and that's about the same percentage of Americans who don't have health insurance at all. And if what is meant is 78% of people who have health insurance like their insurance just fine, again, what are they being invited to compare it to? What they had in the recent past. And what they are then comparing it to is another plan quite similar to the one they have now, all inside the context of the most broken and heinously expensive health care "system" in the western world. It's a comparison being made within a tautological or meaningless frame - like asking people in an Anglophone country whether they like the English language. Yeah, I guess it's fine by me... Figures don't lie - but they are extremely useful for lying!
If 78% of Americans were truly satisfied with their health insurance you could not have polls that say 70 something percent of Americans want health care reformed with the inclusion of a public option or 50 percent wanting health insurance replaced entirely with govt run single payer.

14. The issue is what will be the option for those who are not satisfied |
|
Regardless of the statistics. Whether it is 22% or 50%, those people need an out that doesn't include insurance provided by the people who have already failed to satisfactorily provide them with health coverage.

15. The issue is also what happens when you lose your job or your employer |
|
drops health insurance as a benefit because he/it cannot afford it anymore. Now, many cannot afford health care or have a pre existing condition and no company will provide you with coverage or will exclude all costs related to the pre existing condition. Sure people like their existing coverage-it beats the alternative of no coverage.

16. Of the 78%, how many are on government-sponsored programs? |
|
These "polls" never distinguish between who is on private insurance and who isn't.

18. My employer happens to pay about 85% of our premiums, I have been told. |
|
It is still fairly costly at that. I could not imagine paying even half of the premiums. Our coverage is good, but DAMN, is it ever costly. Even if I like my current health care situation, it doesn't mean I am content with the exorbitant costs and lack of coverage and denial of coverage based on pre-existing conditions that are happening to millions of citizens. I am not of the survival of the fittest asshole crowd.
