Regarding President Obama’s speech on health care reform -
Searching the full text of the speech, he used the word consumer 4 times, twice as part of the phrase “consumer protections”, twice in reference to “ a good deal for consumers” and “consumers doing better when they have choices”.
He used the word citizen twice - once in mentioning citizens who can’t get coverage, once in refuting the death panels meme about killing senior citizens.
CHOOSE.
Do you want to be a citizen, or merely a consumer? Do you think health care should be something citizens should be entitled to, or something to be purchased as a commodity.
The current frame and discussion is only about providing a commodity and how to make it more widely available.
Many of the supporters of the President’s proposal are willing to write and call their representatives (as good citizens ought) and clamor for a more affordable commodity.
I don’t want an affordable commodity. I don’t want a Public Option, no matter how robust. I want health care that all citizens are entitled to, simply by virtue of being citizens.
HR676 please.
Change the frame, change the discussion, change the outcome.
