Wilson: Mission Accomplished
A legitimate apology does not contain a defense of your own opinion. Joe Wilson took one for the team last night so that the public could see the GOP, with Wilson as it's spokesman, call the President a liar to his face on national television, then brazenly issue a non-apology. The subtext: The office of the President is unworthy of respect while Barack Obama holds it.

Of course there will never be solid proof that this was a planned political hit. History will record that Wilson "acted alone."

1. I agree. I'll bet Wilson is a "birther" too.
This is all rooted in the fact they can't stand to see a Black man in the White House.

22. You win! Now, send that $5 to Rob Miller, Wilson's 2010 opponent:

3. or, Wilson is a boorish, racist boob
Maybe it was a planned hit, but I'm going with the simpler explanation.

4. In a way, I'm glad it happened to demonstrate to all how low they have gone.
No doubt it was sickening to see and I wish it didn't come to that. But, I think Americans are sick of the yelling and name calling. Especially when you see Wilson contrasted with our classy President who is open to compromise and reason.

6. If this was planned
it's the dumbest move they've made, even for the Pugs.

Calling Obama a liar when he stated, (paraphrasing) illegals would NOT be covered was THE dumbest statement to challenge and call the President a liar, during a joint session of Congress, no less!

The big fact checker org's like www.factcheck.org Politico, etc., state flat out that President Obama's statement is TRUE.

9. Yes, but they are playing a game, trying to be the leaders
of the birther/tea baggers... (neither of those groups were actually started by Repukes, and many many of the nutters distrust the repukes almost as much as they distrust the "socialist" Dems).

The real question is WHY they have aligned themselves with the modern day John Birchers? Do they seriously have no other reliable base to turn out for rallies and and such?

7. Well, all members of congress were given a copy of the speech
before it started. So... how spontaneous was the outburst?

8. Yep, a joint session of Congress was turned into a screamer town hall
Wilson owes Congress an apology from the House floor--both for his outburst and for his being either mistaken or lying about what was in the health care reform bill. And I understand another Rethug was wearing a sign around his neck???

10. If so, I doubt that Wilson expected the $400,000 and climbing
contributions to his next opponent in 2010. He alone is responsible for giving his opponent the funds to challenge him.

11. The actual mission: also accomplished
On my first page of GD articles viewing DU right now, there are twenty-three threads about Wilson.

That's a whole lot of attention being diverted away from the actual important matter and onto his little bit of political theatre, which is of course what the GOP and media want.

15. Agreed, but...
...publicly making Wilson analogous to Oswald is definitely not the kind of attention the GOP wants.

16. They might be seeing it not as attention towards them, but attention away from Obama
And they'll take all of the latter they can get, even if they have to get bruised up in the process. If I was one of their strategists, I'd be alright with throwing a rep (or a couple, come the election) under the bus to completely smokescreen a major policy statement by the president.

17. They made me do it!
If that's the strategy, they should have picked a moment that didn't feature the President on-screen. My favorite bit is that withering, WTF glare coming from Pelosi.

I see now that Wilson has eradicated any remaining credibility his non-apology may have had by saying that he was "asked" to make it.

19. My own theory:
Wilson was simply trying to yell "You like pie!" (it is a known fact that Mr. Obama enjoys him some pie!),
but was interrupted by a sharp nudge by some Boehner sitting to his immediate left.

"I approve of this overwrought
and ridiculous explanation!

20. Mission accomplished, indeed
He makes the next day's story about his outburst, rather than the President's speech. He guarantees that there will be intense media scrutiny of the bill as it relates to illegal immigrants, including verification procedures. And he gives the rest of the Repukes something to push off from as they disavow him.

He becomes the teabaggers' new hero, and we can expect to see his outburst on ten thousand signs at healthcare protests over the coming months. And all this from a guy that 99.9999% of Americans couldn't have picked out of a lineup the day before the speech. He gained far more than he lost with this.
