Senator Reid says a co-op plan would count as a public option!

Co-op plan could work as public option, Reid says
September 10, 2009

The Senate's top Democrat said that a co-op style health plan, the vehicle most likely to emerge from the Senate Finance Committee, would count as a public option if it works to keep insurance companies in check.

“The purpose of a public option is this: to create competition, which is so important, and create quality healthcare,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) told reporters. “So if we can come up with a concept of a cooperative that does just that—makes more competition and makes insurance companies honest—yes, I think that would fill the bill.” Reid has said before that he champions a public health insurance plan as part of a broader legislative reform package, but has been vague on how such a program should be designed.

A legislative framework, circulated by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.), clears the way for not-for-profit co-op plans over ones that would have a heavier federal touch. Last night during his address to Congress, Obama said he would be open to a variety of ways to shape a public plan.

9. Is this the co-opt plan?
Every damn time I see the word co-op, I read it as co-opt.
