CNN is reporting that the Coast Guard has fired 10 rounds at a "suspicious vessel" in the Potomac River.

D.C. Harbor Patrol, however, said that the incident may be a training exercise.

A temporary restricted zone had been set up on the river due to the Pentagon 9/11 ceremony, according to CNN.

The media's job isn't to report rumors or incomplete information that most certainly will send people into a panic. Their job is to confirm what's happening BEFORE throwing it out there as breaking news. We've gotten so used to irresponsible journalism these days ("Hey! We can scoop everyone with tv, even when we don't know what's happening yet!") that we don't even flinch anymore. CNN screwed up. They completely misreported something, and on today of all days, when people already are in a state of raw nerves over remembering 9/11. CNN ought to be ashamed.

Pete Williams is saying Coast Guard thingy much ado about nothing. Nothing was visible. No shots fired. Press report was incorrect.

Some ham nerd was eavesdropping on Coast Guard radio signals and got alarmed. He called news agency, which falsely reported shots fired.

Pete Williams says even calling it a "training exercise on the river" is misleading. It was solely on radio, on Coast Guard frequencies.
