I spent my lunch hour protesting our school superintendent
A very substantial crowd turned out to let our superintendent know that his decision to block President Obama's school address was wrong. Near the end of the demonstration, he, to his credit, came out and took questions. This is a man who home schooled his own kids before taking the promotion to the top spot in the school district. He was nervous and defensive. His first big excuse was the lesson plans that were sent out. As far as I know, they were suggested plans and entirely optional. He promised that the address would be shown at some time, as though that's just as good as a live exchange. He cited time problems on the opening day of school. He was called on this BS by students and teachers alike. The students noted that there had been time for a pep assembly that day but not for the President of the United States. He let slip in his answers that he had gotten a lot of pressure from parents not to air the address. Knowing that he is a Christian fundamentalist, I can pretty well guess that he only listened to one side. I think the lesson learned is that we cannot expect authorities to do the right thing and that getting vocal after the fact is not as effective as speaking up before decisions are made.

1. Good for you. We need to call them on these ridiculous decisions.

2. K&R, and interesting that Mr. Home Schooler
got a superintendent position. Unless I don't understand, and this isn't a public school district...seems weird to me.

I applaud your protest! Good for you.

4. Meanwhile,
while the lunch hour protest and questioning session was happening,

were students learning?

That being the point of public education.

5. Did you put this together yourself?
If not, is there a central location where people are organizing?

I am dealing with the same thing. I plan on writing more about it once I get some answers to a few questions, but I would like to know how you found out about that protest. I wouldn't want to miss out on the chance to attend one if there is one locally.

Perhaps I will just call the local Democratic Party headquarters and see if they have heard of anything. Probably too late anyway.

6. The new head of our local Democratic Party organized it
There was a lot of phone and email traffic getting a good turnout. I saw a lot of faces I hadn't seen since the Bush years.

8. Nice job on confronting Superintendent Don't believe in school
It is putrid that a home schooler would be deciding whats right for everyone else's kids. That's messed up.

Until we demonstrably say we won't take it anymore, it will continue to throttle our nation.
