I voted for Eisenhower. Both times.

(Of course it was in grade school mock elections, but still...)

4. Ike seemed to be a decent person.
You know, I have a soft spot for Gerald Ford. I wasn't even born yet, but I've tried to find as much as I can about his presidency and who he was as a person, and he seemed to be a decent person trying to do what he could in the midst of disaster. Perhaps I'm very wrong, but I like what I know about the man.

13. I voted for Jerry Ford
He was a decent person, and he did try to do what he could in the midst of disaster.

I thought he was right in pardoning Nixon. The country would have been torn apart if he (Nixon) had been tried and convicted. And no one despised Nixon more than I.

I have always been an avid Democrat, but I voted for Ford because I thought Jimmy Carter was inept. And I was proven right.

I think Carter has been an excellent Former President, though. He's done many wonderful things.

By the way, when Carter ran for re-election in 1980, I voted for John Anderson.

25. I voted for Carter in 1976.
But, just last weekend I cleaned out my closet and was going through my political t-shirt collection. I found a t-shirt I bought in N.Y. during that campaign that said "Re-elect Ford". The street vendor did not even know what was funny about it. Its a keeper.

Like you I voted for Anderson in '80.

It was Carter vs. .... who...in 1976? Was it Reagan then, too?

Gov. Stevenson was a fine man, but he would never have been able to hold LeMay in check. Gen. Eisenhower could.

34. That was another time in history when the rabid monkeys were running loose.
Joe McCarthy was still going strong in '52, and I remember people in my family who supported Douglas MacArthur in the primary because he wanted to use nukes to settle the Korean War.

BTW, I seem to recall that Ike surreptitiously helped to put the skids under Tail Gunner Joe.

19. I still respect that name
"I Like Ike" probably rang a bell with you.

Kennedy and Mad Magazine brought me into the Democratic fold, and I haven't wavered with my vote once since then.

Oh wait- I did a write-in vote for Barry Commoner in 1980. He was an eco-Socialist, running as a member of the Citizen's Party. I've always been a strong Carter advocate, but I think I saw the Reagan writing on the wall.

From Wikipedia: His 1971 book, The Closing Circle, suggested a left-wing, eco-socialist response to the limits to growth thesis, postulating that capitalist technologies were chiefly responsible for environmental degradation, as opposed to population pressures. In 1980, he founded the Citizens Party to serve as a vehicle for his ecological message, and his candidacy for President on the Citizens Party ticket won 233,052 votes (0.27% of the total) <1>. His official running mate was La Donna Harris, although she was replaced on the ballot in Ohio by Wretha Hanson.

Sorry, Jackpine- kind of a Highjack!

21. "In Ike we trusted and now we are busted"
I remember seeing these bumper stickers in 1956. I grew up in what at the time was a very Democratic rural county in southern Illinois. My Dad, however, was a Republican and I am sure I voted for Ike in grade school. This county today is unfortunately very racist and Republican.

26. Eisenhower was my first presidential campaign.
My grandfather was one of his county chairman and we campaigned all over my home state (Kansas) in his DeSoto.

I still have a bunch of "I Like Ike" buttons. In fact, just for fun, I wore one during much of last year's primary.

27. Ah, that rang a bell.
My mother, who just turned 90, still has a test paper that was given to her during my third grade parent-teacher conference. Seems I'd finished the test and gotten bored, so I'd turned the paper over to do some doodling. My classmates got done with the test before I finished my doodling and we had to turn them in, so the back of that paper displays crudely drawn block letters proclaiming, "Yay Ike! Boo Ste". Got an extra nickel in my allowance that week.

"McGovern is a nut
He has a rubber butt
And every time he turns around
He goes putt, putt."

Sorry, Sen. McGovern! :hi: I wised up when I was 14 and that asshole Reagan came along. I hated everything that came out of his mouth and couldn't believe people fell for his stupid lies. Turned me liberal on the spot.

36. Ike "got it"
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed."

Too bad Obama doesn't seem to understand that.
