AUSTIN - Former Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle, who gained national attention with his high-profile prosecution of former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, said Friday that he is "leaning toward" running for governor.
The former Democratic prosecutor would join a growing field of contenders in the 2010 Democratic primary if he decides to make the race. Among the other candidates are former U.S. Ambassador Tom Schieffer of Fort Worth, rancher Hank Gilbert of Whitehouse and author-entertainer Kinky Friedman of Austin.
In a telephone interview, Earle, 67, said he hasn't set a timetable but will probably make a decision "sooner rather than later."
Earle served as Travis County District Attorney for 37 years until retiring in December of 2008. His office came under fire from Republicans for its investigation of DeLay, which ultimately resulted in DeLay's resignation from Congress after he was indicted in 2005 for violation of campaign laws.
The case is currently pending in the Texas Court of Criminal. DeLay, who has maintained his innocence, re-emerged in the news in August when he was chosen to compete on the ninth season of "Dancing With the Stars."
