Seriously, the first Czars were appointed by Ronald Reagan and were expanded under every Republican president since, and NOW they're freaking out about czars?

Nixon was the first to come up with "czar", probably because czar was an all-powerful person and yet the czar reported directly to Tricky. If there was anything that was perfectly clear, it was that Tricky liked the fealty of powerful people.

I think the whole "czar" thing started under Nixon, when he first appointed his secretary of energy. I think it was William Simon. Anyway, the term "energy czar" surfaced somewhere or another, and Garry Trudeau brilliantly lampooned it in many editions of "Doonesbury."

"Czar" eventually became a common term for various cabinet members and/or policy advisers to the President.

The right is having a field day with the term now only because it dovetails nicely with all of their "socialism/communism/facism" fearmongering. Never mind that the real Czars predated most of that!
