ABC apologizes to Obama for ABC's Terry Moran's tweet of Obama's off the record swipe at Kanye West
Obama: Kanye Is A "Jackass"

During a CNBC interview on Monday, President Obama called hip-hop artist Kanye West a "jackass" over his behavior at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Obama's colorful remark was actually made in an off-the-record portion of the interview that was tweeted -- and then deleted -- by ABC News reporter Terry Moran.

"Pres. Obama just called Kanye West a 'jackass' for his outburst at VMAs when Taylor Swift won. Now THAT'S presidential," Moran wrote.

Politico's Michael Calderone has ABC's statement apologizing for Moran's journalistic breach.

ABC's Moran removes tweet with Obama swipe at Kanye

ABC News reporter Terry Moran caused quite a commotion tonight on Twitter after writing the following: "Pres. Obama just called Kanye West a "jackass" for his outburst at VMAs when Taylor Swift won. Now THAT'S presidential."

Although it wasn't long before Moran removed it, with over a million followers, the tweet quickly bounced around Twitter through various users. (And it can still be found here).

Now, an ABC spokesperson explains to POLITICO what happened:

In the process of reporting on remarks by President Obama that were made during a CNBC interview, ABC News employees prematurely tweeted a portion of those remarks that turned out to be from an off-the-record portion of the interview. This was done before our editorial process had been completed. That was wrong. We apologize to the White House and CNBC and are taking steps to ensure that it will not happen again.

(h/t Patrick Gavin and Daniel Libit)

UPDATE: A CNBC spokesperson declined comment.

The White House had no immediate comment.

4. See, I don't quite get how this was "Un-Presidential."
1. It was said in private.

2. It was pretty tame as far as put-downs go.

3. It was a 100% true and fitting description of what Kanye did.

So did Terry tweet this just to try to make Obama look uncouth? What a Moran.

5. 'now THAT'S presidential' ---- ya know... this guy from ABC? what a
JACKASS!

presidents are such a touchy subject, that they often live in a shrouded world that when they're not 'on the record', it's respected that you don't blab about something they said. so people hold the office to respect...

is Kanye an jackass? hell yes.

did Obama need to say it? no, but it's an off the cuff response to what he saw that was mean-spirited towards a young woman.

did the "news" guy need to report it? of cour$e!

that Kanye is a good guy who is going through some really bad times.

His mom died not too long ago and I wonder if he's going for the abyss to get some help.

Maybe this is the wakeup he needs.

I know he likes PO..so for the Prez to say he's a "jackass" off the record..maybe this sinks in?

2 cents.

But you are right and he basically said that on Jay Leno last night. He said he never has taken time off to deal with his mother's death and is taking his pain out on others.

I honestly didn't really know who Taylor Swift was...now I know. She's gained a lot of respect for having handled the situation so well. Most would have lashed back but she didn't. Pure class.

35. It's not like a Sister Souljah moment at all, for a couple of reasons.
Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 10:13 PM by SemiCharmedQuark
First and foremost, this was an offhand comment, not an actual address to anyone. Bill was giving a speech.

Secondly, he was criticizing general behavior that everyone is familiar with. It wasn't a misquote, or an observation on a sensitive subject like the riots.

Third, Kanye West has apologized for his behavior. So there is absolutely no disagreement about his behavior being wrong.

Obama called Kanye a jackass, even though Kanye is Black (unlike the "Gates incident" where Obama sided with the Black man against the white cop). That would be a stupid thing to think, but I can see somebody thinking it. I don't know anything about Moran, so I can't say if it is likely he would.
