Poll question: Should I switch parties and register as a Republican?
Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 10:55 PM by LoZoccolo
This would, of course, be to nominate Sarah Palin for presidential candidate in 2012. One catch is that because Roland Burriss is giving up his U.S. Senate seat, there would be a relevant primary run for that which I'd miss out on. But whoever got nominated for that would almost certainly win anyways.

1. If you wish to help Republicans get elected to office, then go ahead.
If you do, I would also kindly suggest that you stop posting on this board.

2. Pretty sure folks switch parties just for the primaries all the time...
But I could be wrong.

Do you care to explain why you find my response idiotic, or should I just put you back on ignore?

8. honestly, do you think i care what random guy on the internet has me on ignore?
that being said, people switching parties to vote for the candidate most likely to lose in the general election, doesnt mean they are helping the party they switched to.

9. Well, it seems to me that if enough voters switch parties
in order to vote for the candidate most likely to lose in the general, then that candidate could possibly win.

And I'm not a guy, Princess.

11. But isn't that why LZ is considering switching? In order to vote Republican?
Certainly anyone can switch parties and still vote for their preferred candidate in a general election.

At least where I live, you can only vote for a candidate who shares your party registration during the primary.

12. You can only vote during the General Election per your party registration?
I dont think so. You can only vote in the primaries per your party registration. Since our primary is already decided, its not necessary for any of us to vote in the primaries for the presidential elections.

16. I must not be making myself clear.
Admittedly, I did have brain surgery earlier this year, so I may not be making myself clear. Let me back up a bit:

First, this:

  • Primary election – Registered Democrats vote for Democratic candidates, Registered Republicans vote for Republican candidates

  • General election – All registered voters may cast a vote for any candidate

Now, can we say for sure that our primary is decided? Has President Obama stated that he is definitely running for re-election in 2012? Have all other potential candidates deferred to President Obama and opted not to run?

I think we need more voters to participate in the Democratic primaries, not fewer. We do not need a situation of Same Shit/Different Democrat. My concern is that the “tea parties” could stir up enough currently non-voting fundies and racists out there who are convinced that President Obama is a Black Muslim Kenyan that we could potentially end up with Sarah Palin as President.

If you think it's a good idea to switch, then go ahead. I just don't agree.

Edited on Tue Sep-15-09 03:23 PM by La Lioness Priyanka
after the carter-kennedy problem, it is not considered common sense not to run another candidate during primaries if there is a sitting president.

NOt agreeing with something doesn't justify why you think he shouldn't be able to post here if he registers as a republican

30. While I have no problem at all with President Obama serving
two terms, I didn't realize that a President of the United States could just "announce" that he plans on being in office for a while!

And I also forgot that only your opinion had any merit. :*

The last time there was a big movement for this everyone crossed and voted for the dumbass Reagan, who no one thought had a chance in a general election and we know how that turned out. It wouldn't surprise me if that didn't happen somewhat for Bush too.

34. I don't wish for Sarah Palin to run for the presidency in 2012...
And I wish other Democrats/progressives would stop saying it would be the greatest thing if she ran. Two reasons:

1.) We must not encourage the idea that her warped sense of reality has a legitimate place in politics. We should not cheer her on to run, because that would mean that her insane ideas would be taken seriously. We must make sure that they get as little attention as possible.

2.) Many believe a Palin candidacy would mean a 'slam dunk' for Obama's re-election. I don't want that to happen. I think that, as long as the Republicans remain the party of extremist crazies, the Democrats can stay comfortably in the Republican's former position, meaning the right of the political spectrum. The only way to get the Democrats to the left again is for the Republicans to reclaim their old position.

Besides, how would you test if someone is a "sincere" member of a party?

43. You do not register with a party in Illinois.
You do not need to have any affiliation with a state party organization to participate in their primaries, just choose your favored partisan ballot at each primary election.

The Republicans will almost certainly nominate a real batshit crazy, right-wing loon in 2012 - which by rational calculations should guarantee a Democratic landslide.

However, I would always fear a historic accident. What if some major unanticipated event or series of events actually resulted in them winning? It is unlikely, but not impossible.

Edited on Tue Sep-15-09 11:32 PM by tritsofme
Each voter is given the choice of a Democratic, Republican, or Independent ballot at the polling place.

You could choose a Democratic ballot in the 2010 primary and a Republican one in 2012 if you like, and go back and forth at your leisure.

There isn't anything particularly interesting happening statewide in 2012 that I can think of off the top of my head. With Illinois' now earlier primary, we may get to have some fun and make some trouble for Republicans.

It's surely more important to vote for good candidates in our party's primaries, than to make mischief in the GOP's. I get as many yuks out of Pentecostal Barbie as anyone, but as a citizen, I'd like to see the Republicans start to recover some sanity--and nominating that wild-eyed zany won't help that cause.
