39. It's true, however. Believe it or not.
Kucinich also had some serious issues with the black community as mayor.

If you know anyone that lives in or near Cleveland, and is familiar with the political terrain here, the old ethnic vote was always along racial lines in who they voted for.

Now, not so much after all the white flight of the last thirty years, they have all run to the suburbs.

Dennis is a politician, first and always. He says and does what he needs to do in order to get elected. And if that included a little pandering to an entirely white, eastern European descended audience that didn't want black people moving into their neighborhood, he did it.

I was there. I heard what the man said back then...you know, when he was firmly anti-abortion.

47. What Ikonoklast says is true. Unfortunate, but true.
Before Dennis the Menace became the liberal hero of everyone outside of Cleveland, he was in Cleveland playing race politics with the white European ethnics who populated his part of the city.

Then he did a "wonderful" job as mayor, barely avoiding being recalled because he insisted on giving big business the finger rather than trying to find ways that business and government could work in concert to help make life better for people.

The only good thing he ever did was save the city electrical plant. But it was a Pyrrhic victory--it ultimately resulted in the city going into default.

Dennis is not the god people think he is. Obama's not a god either, just in case anyone thinks I'm saying he is. If Obama bends over backwards too much to please others, well, Dennis won't budge a damn inch to work with anyone, and that doesn't fly.

There are no gods. We deal with what we can get. I'm just saying, some people continue to believe we'd have sunshine and rainbows if Dennis was prez. I'm here to tell you, we would not. And I'm not the only Clevelander who will say that.

88. Seriously??
Do you even know what TARP Reform and Accountability Act was?

This bill will amend the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP) provisions of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (EESA) to strengthen accountability, close loopholes, increase transparency, and require Treasury to take significant steps on foreclosure mitigation. It further requires that Treasury act promptly to permit the smaller community financial institutions that have been shut out so far to participate on the same terms as the large institutions that have already received funds.

Common Cause strongly supports this legislation and urges Congress to pass HR 384 before releasing the second half of the bailout funds.

Get your facts straight before you start accusing others of hypocrisy.

Can't remember his exact words, but he said he wasn't about to begin deciding who was a jerk in Congress (very paraphrased). I think that he meant that he would err on the side of free speech and he was the last person to judge where the line should be drawn.

I disagree: the rules of what speech is not allowed are clearly defined and should be upheld for the sake of civility and being an example to the rest of the country.

28. Here's Hodes' statement (from his website)...
Edited on Tue Sep-15-09 05:15 PM by polichick
"We need to work together as Republicans and Democrats to craft a bill that seeks to lower costs, increase quality of care, and put families back in control of their health care. In my judgment, it’s time to move on and I do not support this resolution. We should not allow Mr. Wilson’s reckless conduct to overshadow the need to work together to craft a strong health care reform measure that gives Americans lower costs, more choice, and real control in a fiscally responsible fashion.”

44. Yeah. And letting
the fuckwad get away with deplorable behavior would hasten a bipartisan effort to "work together to craft a strong health care reform measure that gives Americans lower costs, more choice, and real control in a fiscally responsible fashion"?

I'm sorry. It would have set a precedent for free-for-all outbursts in the future by these bullies. Offensive behavior has been practiced by both parties throughout history. But President Obama has been treated extraordinarily bad and must be shown the same respect that has been given to every president before him.

69. I have never found a politician I agree with 100% of time. Maybe
Bernie Sanders, and Feingold rarely lets me down. DK is usually right on. I think he played an important role in moving the debate to the left in 2008. Sometimes, though, he throws crazy curve balls. He makes a lot of 'ethical' votes or 'symbolic' votes. When a bill is going to sail through and he opposes it on principle. He openly considered joining a ticket with Ron Paul, I still don't understand that. I think he has a place in politics, and he is in it. He is in a district that keeps sending him to Congress. He has the platform to espouse positions few dare to take in DC. He got this one wrong, and will from time to time. But, I am still glad he is there.

70. It was the Ron Paul thing that pushed me out of the DK camp for good.
My brain hurts just thinking about it. But, before the last primary season really got going, I must admit that DK's philosophy was much closer to mine than anybody else's.

75. DK probably agrees with Obama....
...that debating and voting on whether the congressman from SC is an asshole is a total waste of time and a diversion from Life or Death issues that SHOULD be dominating the business in Congress.
As Feel Goody as this resolution may be, it IS a complete waste of time, and creates a martyr for the rabid conservatives.
The potential for unintended consequences is HIGH.
It also makes The Democrats appear as petty as The Republicans.
Congress should have followed Obama's example.

Just a guess.
I'll wait until DK makes an announcement.

But yes, let's let the Democrats do what they've always done and be doormats for the Republicans. :eyes:

This isn't about Obama directly. This is about the rules that Congress sets for itself.
Edited on Tue Sep-15-09 06:40 PM by msallied
Disregard the rules and you might as well not have them. You start opening the door to make it permissible to disrespect the office of the president, you'll never get it shut. That racist a-hole needed to be formally slapped on the wrist if anything to make it known that no one was going to be complicit in that kind of behavior.

Besides, it took one freaking hour. It's not like a damn Ken Starr investigation.

103. "We have better things to do"
According to his website:

"My vote against formally reprimanding Rep. Wilson is based on my belief that we should be doing more important things now that Congress is back in session," said Congressman Eric Massa. "I strongly disapproved of Joe Wilson's outburst last week, but I think it's more important for us to be working on solutions rather than voicing more objections to something that happened almost a full week ago. The issues facing the American people are more important than myself, Rep. Wilson, or President Obama and I think we owe it to the public to continue working for them right now."

Wilson gave same reason for not apologizing to House...there were more important things to do.
Fine. Wilson would have saved the house a lot of time by simply saying "I'm sorry, now let's get to work"

93. What I don't get is
the liberals on the list have made statements saying this vote is a waste of time. Well, then why the fuck did bother to show up and vote. Kind of like Boehner saying this issue is a waste of time then requesting an additional 15 minutes for debate.
