Jimmy Carter - animosity toward Obama based on his race

"In an interview with NBC's Brian Williams, former Democratic President Jimmy Carter attributed much of the conservative opposition that President Obama is receiving to the issue of race.

"I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man," Carter said. "I live in the South, and I've seen the South come a long way, and I've seen the rest of the country that share the South's attitude toward minority groups at that time, particularly African Americans."

Carter continued, "And that racism inclination still exists. And I think it's bubbled up to the surface because of the belief of many white people, not just in the South but around the country, that African-Americans are not qualified to lead this great country. It's an abominable circumstance, and it grieves me and concerns me very deeply."

9. Jimmy Carter is right on.

It is easy to see that there are whites who cannot tolerate a Black being in the White House, let alone have one speak down to them from the dais. For Wilson to say he was told to call and apologize...and, to apologize to Rahm, rather than Obama, was as close as he was going to come to apologize to a Black man. He showed it again when he was told to apologize from the well.

Boehner said it the best when he stated something to the effect that he didn't need to be lectured to by Obama. He's said that several times and I get the feeling that he not only won't be lectured to by a Black man, but a young Black man.

There are a bunch of egos that can't handle Obama. They hate that he is so polished and can draw huge crowds and fire them up like we've never seen before.

I'm just surprised Wilson didn't end his outburst with Boy!

some of DeMint's speech at the rally, and he mentioned the "we won't tolerate being lectured to" thing as well. Got lots of cheers. Of course he was pretending to be speaking as a "fellow patriot" not as an asshat senator responsible for the runaway spending the last 8 years.

They do seem to have found a code that all the "patriots" understand.

I live in the South. He lived in the South before and after the civil-rights movement. He knows racism when he sees it, and I was thrilled to hear his statement tonight. If I ever meet him, I think I'd have to ask him if I can give him a hug.

She did it on Keith Olbermann's show fairly soon after Obama took office.

And they hated her for calling them out on it. The truth hurts.

32. As Maddow pointed out

virtually all Democratic Presidents in the last nearly 100 years have had to deal with it in some form. But there is something about the overt stupidity, threatened violence, and complete incivility of this round that speaks to something different.

I don't think it is just because President Obama is black. It is also that he ran precisely opposed to them, as a more or less unrepentant member of the left, unafraid of the word "liberal" (true or not), and won large. This is just an extra thumb in the eye for those folks.
