The definition of compromise |
|
–noun 1. a settlement of differences by mutual concessions; an agreement reached by adjustment of conflicting or opposing claims, principles, etc., by reciprocal modification of demands.
You know, with all the talk about Obama and the Dems not compromising with the Republicans, I had to go back to the dictionary and look this up. Just to make sure the definition hadn't been changed. It hasn't.
As far as I'm concerned, the Dems have compromised (big time) by not even proposing single payer. What are the Republicans giving up? What is their "mutual concessions"? What are they adjusting? A compromise can't be reached when only one side modifies its position. If they want in on this, it's time for the Republicans to get serious about concesstions. Remember, WE won in November.
Also, Max Baucus should look at this alternate definition of compromise (cough cough, insurance industry donations): 4. an endangering, esp. of reputation; exposure to danger, suspicion, etc.: a compromise of one's integrity.
