UN Ambassador Susan Rice at WH briefing to discuss President Obama's schedule at UN next week
Calling Obama's UN visit historic, Rice highlights the importance of "transnational security challenges."

The UN is "essential" in the administration's efforts to make Americans safer, she says.

DIG: "Rather than throw up our hands and walk away," Rice says, the US is staying to work issues through.

And now we're getting a very detailed walkthrough of the schedule. (12:29 p.m.)

Tuesday: Obama delivers remarks at secretary general's summit on climate change; and he hosts a lunch for leaders in Sub-Saharan Africa (read: no Qadhafi); bilateral mtg with Hu Jintao.

Wednesday: Obama delivers his first speech to the UN; "He'll lay out a new direction that he has set for foreign policy."

He'll also host a meeting with nations that have contributed the most troops to war and peace keeping operations; lunch of UN secretary general; bilateral meeting with Russia's Medvedev; host a US reception.

Thursday: A summit meeting on nuclear non-proliferation.

Rice: "It's a very full agenda."
