CAMILLE PAGLIA (alleged intellectual, notorious attention seeker) SUPPORTS THE BIRTHERS!
Edited on Fri Sep-18-09 04:04 PM by Julius Civitatus
Revolting, embarrassing, ... but not unexpected from professional attention-seeker Camille Paglia, one of the few intellectuals who openly supported George W. Bush and the Iraq war.

She's now supporting the "birther movement" and claims that they are NOT racist, and that they have a point.

Why does Salon.com and NPR care about what Camille Paglia has to say? Why do they keep bringing her opinions in the media? Is there no controversial subject she would not embrace?

Paglia: ‘Birthers’ Aren’t Racist, and They Have a Point

Camille Paglia, the lone Salon.com columnist who can count on her ramblings getting regular links from The Drudge Report, appeared on NPR’s “On Point” yesterday and made a spirited defense of the “birther” movement. The exchange came about 36 minutes in, after one caller to the show recounted his experiences at the 9/12 march on Washington. Paglia snapped back at him:

"First of all, I reject the idea that the “birther” campaign is motivated by racism. There may be racism among it, but there are legitimate questions about the documentation of Obama’s birth certificate. I’m sorry, I’ve been following this closely from the start. To assume that all those signs about the birth controversy were motivated by racism, that is simply wrong."

Paglia has been on this beat before, writing in April that “there were ambiguities about Obama’s birth certificate that have never been satisfactorily resolved.” But this particular interview is compelling, especially for Paglia’s convoluted explanation that she despises victim politics but thinks “The Sopranos” was a bigoted portrayal of Italian-Americans.

9. Camille Paglia was a media darling in the 80s as open lesbian, feminist, and
vociferous media critic. She's a prominent art professor in Philadelphia.
At a point in the late 1980s and early 1990s she discovered that by making extremely controversial allegations, she got a LOT of media attention. Case in point, she became a rabid ANTI-FEMINIST, making extremely controversial statements any time a mic or camera were nearby.

The late Molly Ivins was an open critic of Paglia, and never missed an opportunity to expose her vanity and hunger for controversy, like this:

http://www.its.caltech.edu/~erich/misc/ivins_on_paglia

Paglia's words denote she's a very wretched person who thrives in controversy.

7. She doesn't believe in global warming, either. I can't decide
if she an idiot or just likes to be contrary. Salon needs to dump her and stop paying for her idiocy.

Yet they disgrace themselves by publishing Paglia. She brings nothing to Salon and is an insult to its readers. Joan Walsh is way off base by keeping her in rotation.

"To assume that all those signs about the birth controversy were motivated by racism, that is simply wrong." She is right.
The ones that aren't racists are just fucking idiots. Paglia is one of the idiots.

I always thought she was anti-liberal as well as anti-feminist.

23. Thank you. Good point.
I read an article about her in the early early nineties that called her "libertarian," but that was a while back. It's weird that Paglia supports Palin and not Hillary Clinton, but I never agreed with Paglia's politics.

16. Well Paglia, if you've been "following it closely from the start", then you must know about this:

However, she criticized Clinton for not resigning after the Monica Lewinsky scandal, which she says led to America being "blindsided by 9/11."

21. She's done?
She never was. Outside of the wasabi-munching, Philip Glass-listening, pseudo-intellectual circuit, she never had a following. Subscribers to "The New Yorker" will be aghast (but they're always aghast at some damn thing or another). The rest of us couldn't give two shits what she says.
