Obama faces trial by ‘angry white seniors’
Over coffee and Coke at a drugstore-meets-soda-bar in the Virginian town of Fredericksburg, the four grey-haired ladies could hardly have held more diverging views about the performance of Barack Obama, US president.

“I’m very pleased with him,” says Beverley Parks, 77, the most liberal of the group and the only one who voted for the president. “I think he’s doing his best.”

Alberta Hickman, 71, does not share her friend’s views. “I think is doing too much too soon and he is ramming things down our throats,” says the self-described conservative. “We don’t want healthcare reforms to be made too quickly. Instead, he should sit down and listen to the country.”

The votes of “seniors” – retired people such as Mrs Parks and Mrs Hickman – will be crucial in next year’s mid-term elections, when the Democrats will seek to retain control of Congress and, with it, the ability to push through reforms without Republican support.

5. Wonder if they thought LBJ was moving too quickly
back in 65 long before they were eligible to Medicare. Maybe someone ought to explain that fight to them and how they benefitted. Really ticks me off to see folks you know are on medicare or vets who proably benefit from the VA out there as teabaggers.

9. ticks me off too when they have government health care
like medicare but they don't want anyone else to have a decent health care plan. Everyone deserves to have good health care and I don't get the seniors reasoning who are opposing this. So wishing for single payor for us all. Or at the very least a public option that anyone can join. As far as I am concerned we can't move fast enough. We have waited way too long already. Heart breaking to hear some of the horror stories out there about people being denied treatment. I wonder don't these people hear that?

the country.”

Well health care reforms were talked about in Truman's administrating. She would have been in her 20's then. We've been listening to the country for 50 years on this shit!

The seniors will vote the same way they did in 2000 when mid-term elections happen.

Kudos to Beverly, though. She's a cool old gal. :)

7. Can they hire reporters who can write?
Edited on Fri Sep-18-09 06:47 PM by Mass
There are enough anecdotes, use of banalities and of "some", that I have no idea what she is reporting on, on what evidence, and how the title is justified. They have ONE old lady opposing Obama's plan and that justifies the title.

8. This "angry white senior" is for
the most part content with the President , the alternative would have been unbearable. But these Democrats better not take me for granted.

11. Very unwarranted, and really sad.

I have an 89 year old MIL, who is desperately trying to get what the reform is about. She knows that it is important and she should be for it, but each time we go see her, she is more and more confused, because of the poor quality of news she hears.

This lady is polite, and probably in the same situation than my MIL. She just is unsure of what is proposed (and there should be no surprise). Calling her out like that is really sad, particularly based on such a poorly written article.

the future or how fast the world is changing
or what impact it's going to have on you.

Your time has past. It's the people under
forty who have the most say in what the future
holds for them because they have to live in a world
post 2020. Which I should point out is only one
presidential cycle past the OBama Presidency.

Not a lot of time. So, old folks, it's time to
shut your festering gobs about a future which
you will never see.
