"Fifty years from now, Americans will revere the name 'Obama'"
http://www.cbc.ca/mobile/text/story_news-canada.html?/ept/html/story/2009/09/17/mulroney-gala-montreal.html

There's a Conservative prime minister who has launched a stirring defence of universal health care, and lauded U.S. President Barack Obama in his bare-knuckle political battle to extend benefits to all Americans.

But it's not the current one.

Brian Mulroney used a speech to 1,500 Conservative supporters in Montreal to wade where Prime Minister Stephen Harper has steadfastly refused to venture: the bitter U.S. debate over health reform.

The former prime minister drew parallels between Obama's uphill fight to reform health care to his own struggles as prime minister, which may have cost him popularity but benefited the country.

"Political capital is acquired to spend in great causes for one's country," Mulroney said Thursday.

"Prime ministers are not chosen to seek popularity. They are chosen to provide leadership .… President Obama is fighting for a form of universal health care and is encountering ferocious resistance.

"The attacks on President Obama are often bitter and mean-spirited and his approval ratings are sinking like a stone. Still, he fights on .…

"Fifty years from today, Americans will revere the name, 'Obama.'"

1. Not sure about the "sinking like a stone" part, but I appreciate the sentiment.

3. So today at the Panera I was lost in thought........
.... thinking about the chances of ANOTHER African American being elected to the Presidency in the near future were very slim. But the NEXT generation, those 10 and younger today would not doubt supply us with the next African American (male or female) President.

I could envision someone, now a child, citing him as an influence in their lives and how they tried to pattern themselves after him.

It will be fun to watch.

6. Is infamy really the right word?
Edited on Fri Sep-18-09 07:01 PM by Cant trust em
When I think of infamy, the images that come to mind are things that get their fame from being bad.

Things like the attack on Pearl Harbor, John Dillinger and El Guapo from Three Amigos.

8. the torch has been passed to Pres. Obama
Edited on Fri Sep-18-09 07:09 PM by ngant17
and who would have predicted it, after MLK was gunned down in Nashville in April, 1968, almost 40 years prior to this historic election?

This is exactly what Sen. Wellstone would have championed, were he not killed suddenly in 2002. The same for JFK Jr., killed suddenly in 1999.

For too long, we've seen popular and progressive leaders in our modern American history suddenly perish in mysterious and unusual ways.

By some freak accident of history, we have finally been presented with a new and progressive leader who has yet to be stopped dead in his tracks by the radical and secretive manipulatons of the radical rightwing.

Keep on trucking, Pres.Obama, America needs you more than ever now!
