Chapel Hill, N.C. — Elizabeth Edwards, wife of former presidential candidate and U.S. Sen. John Edwards, held a grand opening Saturday for her new Chapel Hill furniture store.

“It sort of varied from what it was going to be, but probably for the past eight or nine years, I thought I'd like to eventually have a furniture store,” she said.

-snip-

On Saturday, She and her husband, former NC senator and presidential candidate John Edwards, were all smiles for the grand opening of Mrs. Edwards' new furniture store, Red Window.

The Chapel Hill store is an idea, Elizabeth Edwards said, dating back to her childhood.

"My mother had a charity store when I was growing up where she got Japanese antiques and sold them," she said.

The new shop on West Rosemary Street offers North Carolina furnishings at wholesale prices.

"I try to go to High Point and buy good things at a great price," she said. "Sometimes that means I've got to buy a lot of them, but then pass the good price along to customers here in Chapel Hill."

Elizabeth Edwards called the store a family endeavor. On hand for the opening was her assistant manager and 11-year-old daughter Emma Claire, along with John Edwards.

"I do more moving furniture than anything else," John Edwards said. "This is Elizabeth's deal, but everybody in the family is trying to help support her."

The grand opening came as the Edwards' family deals with a federal investigation and tabloids that don't seem to go away.

The latest headline claimed John Edwards was helping his former mistress, Rielle Hunter, and her baby move to Wilmington near his waterfront home.

It was the first time the couple has been seen together publicly since sources told WRAL News that they expect John Edwards to announce he is the father of his former mistress' child.

John Edwards confessed last August to having an affair with Rielle Hunter, who served as a videographer on Edwards' 2008 campaign. He has denied fathering her daughter, saying his relationship with Hunter ended before the child was conceived.

The name of the girl's father isn't disclosed on her birth certificate.

When asked about the paternity reports, Elizabeth Edwards said Saturday that she and John are focused on their children and moving on with their lives.

“We have not been distracted too much by reports that we absolutely can not control. There's nothing we can do about them. All we can do is go about our own lives,” she said.

21. I would think the poster means she didn't deserve the kind of treatment she's had from him in
their marriage. Although I do think it's none of our business.

7. Won't comment on the sincerity of his populism, but he wouldn't have had it any easier.
I still say Obama's upbringing would make him a more determined deliver of what Edwards was selling.

11. Dreams are all there ever was
His Senate record was an UNpopulist as you can get. There are many real populists. The fact is that in 2004, he positioned himself as the closest thing to Bill Clinton available in 2004 seeing that as what would win the nomination. He had a DLC voting record, he was Southern and the media said he was charismatic. In 2008, with Hillary being the by far stronger centrist candidate - he looked for an opening on the left - and he gathered a team that put together an excellent set of programs.

6. This news was none of our business. Reilly Hunter was
used like Monica Lewinsky. These two women knowingly had affairs with men who had families. These men did what many powerful wealthy men do, and that is the only reason this is news. I'm sorry for Elizabeth that we as a country can't let what is left of her life be spent peacefully.

9. Elizabeth is moving on with John...putting herself in the spotlight with the furniture store...
It's not us who are not letting Elizabeth and John live in peace. It's themselves.

"Health hath no fury like the revenge of a woman." ...an old saying.

13. The saying is "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned".
Even though the correct quotation is "Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned, Nor hell a fury like a woman scorned". It's from a 17th century play called "The Mourning Bride" by William Congreve.

14. It was originally going to be called "The Red Door"
At least that is what was in the original news report that I read.

The name was most likely changed when someone pointed out that the name "The Red Door" was already being used by a store in Charlotte, NC, and that store is a rather notorious retailer of sex toys, erotic lingerie and such.

18. Edwards? Disgraced. Rudy? Newt? Credible statesmen, political pundits, national security authorities
... because it's OK if you're a Republican.

Sure, what Edwards did was caddish and wrong -- but we have a BIGGER problem when the press whitewashes Republican horndogs and maximizes the transgressions of Democrats in the most prurient possible manner.

20. Rudy is a veritable creep.
The only one of the 15 candidates running in either party who I thought was not fit to hold any elected office. He's a nasty turd. If he chooses to run for governor, I hope that NY doesn't forget the dictatorial manner in which he ran the city and the absolutely appalling way in which he divorced his wife (he held a press conference and announced it publicly before informing his wife and children). A truly disgusting man.

23. This is surreal
This story has haunted me since I first saw it a day or two ago. I can't figure out what she's doing.

Opening a retail store in this economy? In any economy? Retail is a very tough, very demanding business. I opened a store and worked 24/7 and still didn't make it. She has a law degree and two small children. They don't need the money. It's not a second hand shop. Opening a small furniture store in NC sounds insane what with High Point NC being the biggest market for furnishings in the world. It's my understanding that much of it is manufactured there. Why go to a small store in Chapel Hill when you can go to High Point? My best guess is there are a million places like Red Window around there.

She's having a mid life crisis, not that she doesn't deserve one with the way John has treated her.

Maybe she just wants a hobby. In which case, I'd suggest something more fun than retail!

31. Furniture and textiles in NC have been decimated.
Edited on Mon Sep-21-09 10:50 AM by WorseBeforeBetter
High Point is not what it was. I have a PT job in a furniture store, and most of our products come from China, Romania and Mexico. Max Home, which we carry, is made in Mississippi.

Chapel Hill is a wealthy area (local money, RTP employees, retirees pouring into the state, and college students with mommy and daddy's credit card (not all, but some)), and I imagine she'll do just fine. If not, they can certainly afford any financial losses.

If this makes Elizabeth Edwards happy, so be it.

32. I thought a bit surreal too
Yes retail is tough, and such a difficult business to start in a recession. I don't think furniture availability is the issue though. High Point is not what it once was, and the furniture industry has been decimated in NC. There aren't many furniture stores where Elizabeth is in Chapel Hill, but there's not much demand for one either I don't think. The Research Park, the universities and the state of NC are feeling the recession in a big way. Who will be her customers?

It seems to be about a long lost dream, and family nostalgia.

I thought she might do something of a more community-minded nature, maybe something cultural or arts related in the Triangle, or a non-profit service org like Habitat for Humanity. People would be on board with that.

I realize why she's doing it--ie. to stay sane in the midst of disaster.
